No more *new* old MBs for me

Hello,
Looks like I will not be carrying out any *old car* projects as my friendly medical practictioner has just informed me that I have multiple sclerosis. All those years of chronic back pain was mis-diagnosed.
I guess that means I will have to pass on the 1960 300d and will not be converting the W115 200 to the Made in India OM616 turbo engine
Tough luck.
Have a good week.

I don't believe you should cancel your project due to your condition. Get yourself a shop monkey/ helper if necessary, but keep living your life.

I agree with Joe. I have Dystonia, which for those who don't know, is a neuro-muscular disease of the Parkinson family, so I cannot work on my own cars unless it's a simple 5 minute fix. I can barely hang onto a wrench, due to tremor, spasms and weakness, but that hasn't stopped me from owning and enjoying "Pearl"- I went the route of finding a good mechanic who knows the ins and outs of servicing these cars. I understand what you're saying from a project point of view though.

In my glory days, I loved working on cars, and could do just about everything. I restored a '72 BMW 2002 from the ground up. I still remember taking all the front suspension apart laying in the snow underneath the car. Never had a garage to work in but that didn't stop me either.

Hope the MS doesn't mess up your life too much. From what I've read, it's a disease that has some remarkable possibilities of controlling via alternative therapies. I saw a program where they found that bee-stings are very effective at controlling the symptoms. Not a very pleasant thought, but I get Botulism Toxin injections for my illness- supposedly the most toxic substance known to man, but works very well to control the tremor and spasm. Unfortunately, it also increases the weakness.

Go as long as you can Nachi, four stents in the arteries a few months back and a great comeback from cancer makes me want to reach even futher. Gal down the street has had MS for 12 years (she is about 65 now) still riding her bike around the block. Sad to say just yesterday I spoke up for a friend who had his third DWI. The Jury gave him NINE years. NINE years in the State Pen at Huntsville. Yes he is a fool. A dark dark time for him. Take it day by day my friend hold to all you can even you car. Be well and try to keep positive.

Nachi,
very sorry to hear that. I have enjoyed reading your posts and gained a little insight into what makes these cars tick over the years.
Regroup and make the garage more ergonomic and usable by you and continue working on these.

regards

Wink Thank you for the kind words

Hello,
Hey, I am not dead YET
Just the cost factor will severely crimp my cars budget
I still plan on getting hold of another 107SL, preferably an early 350SL, now eligible for road tax exemption here.
I will continue haggling with the Adenaur owner, I think he will crack in the end, all I need to show him is the parts prices in one of the supplier catalogs
The thing that got me is the years of swallowing pills for something that I did not even have
You live and you learn.
Have a good week.

Hey Nachi, remember, over 200,000 people died due to the Tsunami. They had things they wanted to do and put them off saying, I'll get to it tomorrow. Well, tomorrow never came for them.

Get on with it, man, and enjoy life now.

Yep, dont be worried that you have to be whistling as you walk past the graveyard yet.... Friend of mine was diagnosed with MS of the lower spine nearly 20 yrs ago. Meanwhile he's been living it up same as usual ever since. Works with computers as an architectural draftsman and is motorcycle enthusiast.

Well, that was pretty much Frank Mallory's comment a few days before he passed on this summer. He was in bed resting, while guiding his daughter through a distributor replacement on a 280se using a walkie-talkie.

It ain't over until it's over.

PS. And if you can't handle that Adenaur, pass it to the rest of us.

That would be wishful thinking on your part

BTW, I started the 170DS last weekend after it sat for 8 years.
It took a bit of preparation, but fired up OK and smoked out ALL the bugs for about two blocks
My neighbor threatened to call the DOE
It was a barrel of laughs, my ribs are still aching from laughing so much.
Have a good weekend

Hi Nachi...

Where are you in KL , I would love to meet you and see your cars. I've only ever seen A 170 once in my life.... on the federal highway ...it was green I think. And is the Adenauer your talking about somewhere in Setapak or Wangsa Maju area? I saw one in a workshop around there but it was all stripped, I was lost in KL at the time.

I just got back my old W115.. runs a bit rough..bodys' a bit rougher..but it keeps me out of trouble.

I'd be willing to help you out... I'm sure I'd learn a lot.

Hello,
I see you have got your W115 back, a good move as it will probably outlast any other car you have if the rust is not too serious.
The TWO 300s are in Segamat, but that guy wants $x,xxx, xxx for both cars, one of which, a 300d, does not seem to have registration in Malaysia. I am concerned it may be a car stolen in Singapore or Hong Kong and hidden here for a long time, the chassis ID plates have all been removed, all very suspicious. And I do know where to look for them, as the 170 has basically the same layout.
I live near the TV3 HQ in Damansara Utama, if you ever make it down to KL/PJ, let me know 24 hours beforehand and I will definately try to meet up. I am sorry, but you will not get to see my 170 because I am very concerned about safety, I hope you understand. I have had complete cars and parts stolen in Malaysia while in storage, so experience is my guide here, you are probably not a professional thief, but when info gets out, it is surprising how quickly it gets to the ears of criminals. A 60's Jaguar S-type, Volvo P1800 and VW Type 2 split screen combi were stolen from me some years back, and right now a number of cars are stored with the 170 as well, so I hope you are not offended. Sorry.
Among my family, we have something like six BMWs(three older models), three Alfa Romeos(including a 60s GT)a good number of Volvos(one each 123GT and P1800ES) and my MBs, right now down to two, a W115 200 daily driver, a W116 450SEL and of course the 170DS, both in storage.
Have good week.

The MS is bad, but it could be worse. My mom was diagnosed 35 years ago, before the treatments available now were available. The newer treatments really can delay or even arrest deterioration. My mom died many years later, not of MS, but of being overweight and smoking for more than 40 years. I had friends in Atlanta who had been stable with MS for more than 10 years last I heard.

Misdiagnosis is still common! At the time my mom was diagnosed, the only sure-fire way to diagnose it was with an autopsy, which was not considered practical for her at the time.
