Unhappy Grey market Benz insurance woes

I bought an '84 230CE back in August of last year. When I wanted to get it insured I got coverage but then I was later notified by my insurance company that they would cancel my insurance on all the cars I own if I didn't drop the car before my renewal came up. So I removed it from the policy and then I talked to my insurance agent to get it covered with another company and he told me I needed to switch the rest of the cars I own to whatever company I end up getting coverage for the 230. That idea stinks because my homeowners insurance is linked to my current car insurance and this would create a huge problem. I'm almost faced to getting rid of the car because of the hassle involved. I thought you could just get coverage for a single car elsewhere without having to insure all the cars I own in the same place.
Is this a bunch of BS? Are there any insurance agents out there that can shed some light on this ordeal?

Red face Insurance coverages

This sounds like an insurance agent who wants to throw his weight around.
Actually, I believe you can insure your cars with any company you want to, individually. Since each car is insured for its related value and liability coverage is added to every car (something I don't agree with, since I have three cars and I drive them all -- one at a time) you should be able to insure each car with a different company if you want, but you would lose some of the multiple car discount. If you have the 84 Merc with another company, they would be responsible for all costs related to that vehicle, not your basic company. Insurance underwriters can be ridiculous sometimes; they want to know who drives your other cars, why you have multiple cars and that kind of stuff, but I don't believe there are any insurance laws that say you have to insure all your cars with one company.
For instance, you might find a company that specializes more in providing coverage on rare cars or high performance cars, etc.etc. -- who will give you a much better rate on a particular car than your basic insurance company will. Why can't you put that car with that company .... it is really no other company's business if you want to split your coverage!?

Blueeagle289, that's exactly what I was thinking. I'm going to try to get a quote from another company w/o telling my insurance agent and just see what develops. I have a classic car covered by a separate company but they restrict driving to under 1000 miles which won't work for the 230 since I want to use it as my daily driver.

I would think an 84 230CE should not be insured for collision and comprehensive anyway - and for liability coverage why would they care whether it was U.S. or gray market?

I can only guess that insurance companies are just plain stupid and are probably bound by some stupid rules imposed by the state they do business in.

Now days they type in the Vin# and that sets the rate. If the vin # doesn't decode as grey market and other odd circumstances wont then they dont want to do their homework. Much easier to tell you to go fly a kite.

I had an F350 dually that had some custom work done when it was new that changed the vin# to one that would not decode. I had a heck of a time finding insurance and in the end could only get basic liability.

my observations FWIW

You're right on both.
I think I may know who the insurance brokers are that you are talking about.
I used to live in the L.A. area.

and I disclosed everything to them. You may want to insure it for Fair Market Value... which is probably gonna be the same amount anyway. I can't see why the insurance company would refuse to do that..... I have three grey market cars and had no problems whatseover. They may ask to inspect the car as the VIN number will appear erroneous (sometimes I just got a call to verbally confirm it)... but that's it! Sounds like BS!! Why would you need to switch all you other cars to this new insurance company if you were to insurance one car with them?.. It seems that you agent -- for some reason -- intends to drop your policy no matter what. It is disgusting!

Shop around. Unless you have some bad history, you can, and will, get a better deal getting all insurance from one source. It's less paperwork, research, etc for them.
