'74 Exhaust on '78 450SEL?
My W116 will need a new exhaust soon (as far as I am concerned). My question is whether or not an exhaust system for a 1974 model will fit on a 1978 with no unusual modifications?
Is there anything in particular I need to be aware of in the conversion. As my car is at least 25 years old, it is not required to get an emissions inspection. In other words... "Bye-bye cats!"

I believe the exhaust manifolds are different on the 74 and 78. The 78 has the split-manifold design with the outlet on the rear, while the 74 has the same style as the 108/109's - single manifold on the driver's with the outlet in the center, and dual manifolds on the passenger's side with the header pipe joining them together.
Basically, you'll need the entire system - the manifolds (3 pieces), engine pipes (two pieces), and then the resonator and muffler (two pieces).

Timevalve has a stainless exhaust system for the Euro models. Would this work?

Tomguy is correct. Also, just wanted to mention to make sure
you avoid the '75 and possibly '76 exhaust manifolds that had little catalytic convertors mounted directly under them I cracked both exhaust manifolds on my '74 once, and I believe one of the replacements was from a 77 or 78. It bolted right up to the existing system. Get the exact manifold, look at it and you can determine whether that is all you need. If you can get the header pipe with it (e.g. if you are pulling them out of a junker and can cut the pipe with a muffler pipe cutting tool) do it. |

I've got the maifolds from my '79 450SEL parts car, they are a three piece design with stainless bellows joining the sections.
