IWIS master link
I believe it was PSFred who mentiong that a new timing chain should be "swaged" with the Mercedes Timing Chain tool. That the master link that comes with the new chain is only for installation.
The master link circlips are pretty flimsy, and it sounds like I should get my new chain "swaged". Anyone have any bad expierences with the master link circlips?

There is a long-running debate on the Technical Forum on this.
My .02 - The MB manuals are silent on this, or explain that the single-clip type should face the direction of travel, which is sort of an endorsement of the clips. TTBOMK, no one has ever reproted experiencing or hearing of a problem with the clips. All the shops I have talked to use the clips. I have used them on three engines without a problem. It is not like there is a lot of stress on the clips.

I've used the clip type on two engines without problem. The 4.5 and the 560, have put over 50K miles on the 560 since and everything is working fine. The main thing about the clips was mentioned by Chuck...make sure the open end pf the clip is on the trailing side, that way it can't be knocked off if the chain should rub along the side.

I don't know abotu your chain, but mine had 2 clips for the master link (2 small ones) instead of the more traditional single large clip.
I'm using them and I havent had an issue. Direction they face isn't as important since they're so small, they won't ride on the rails at all. Sure, if you want unneeded hassle or safety of mind, get them crimped. But I'm running my engine on the clips and I feel it's safe.

Im running the 2 small clips as well. Feel like they are safe but its always in the back of my mind. But hearing the reputation iwis has, I feel a lot better about it. Along with knowing that a lot of members here have had no problems with it either.
