M117 Taking intake off
Hello everyone!!!!
Happy easter to most and whatever else to everyone else!!! AIght so the '78 is acting up (doesnt idle at all when the weather warms up a tad above freezing. Could a dirty manifold be the problem or do I have a massive vac leak from somewhere else that misteriously only comes up when its warm) so Im thinking about taking the intake manifold off, cleaning it/sandblasting it, new seals, and putting it back on. How long does this take and I cant find any info on the steps. I know I need the seal between the lower and upper parts of the manifold as well. In my research I saw that the fuel distributor has to be removed or something and reset or something. I am confused about that part obviously. Could someone do a step by step for me and to help out a few other members as well. I much appreciate the help as usual!! Peter |

Pulling the manifold is really a last ditch measure - hope you've sorted out all ignition, fuel delivery, and vacuum problems.
You need to remove the metal lines from the FD to the injectors to get at the manifold bolts but not the FD itself. The job is really a lot of unbolting and putting it back in reverse order.

The D-Jet manifold is a pain as it is - you have your work cut out for you!
I'd verify you have no vac leaks first. Measure the manifold vac at idle and make sure it's strong (mine was 14" at idle but is probably more now, with the new chain not retarding the intake valve openings). I'm not an expert at K-Jet setups but have you also verified your timing is set properly, and all your temp sensors are in working order?

I sprayed some of GM's top of the engine cleaner in there last night, it seemed to work but the problem only arises after a long idle period in a little above freezing to mid 50s weather.
I did the timing chain a few months ago and timing is perfect, the engine pulls very well in all ranges and now that I finally changed out the last injector its smooth as well from start to redline. I will check the manifold pressure, I have tried looking for the main vaccum line but couldnt figure out where it was. If someone has a drawing or a scheme of it, I would greatly appreciate being pointed to it. Tomguy, What are temp sensors? I was wondering a while back if there was a such thing in my engine as it would make sense but couldnt find anything like it. Could you expand on that a little. Thank you for the replies, Peter |
