Replacement fog lights for 114?
My fog lights are looking old and tired. Time to refurbish or is there a reasonably priced look-a-like replacement?
I’m not too fussy about originality but I don’t want black plastic either. I put JCW specials on my first MB but IIRC, they rusted within a year. I’m thinking under $100 with $60-$75 being just right. Michael

Two things come to mind:
1) I was able to get a pretty darn nice set of lenses on eBay a year or so ago for not more than $40 2) I had one that had a cracked lens so water got inside and rusted the reflector. With nothing to lose, I used very fine steel wool and took as much of the rust off as I could and got it nice and smooth. Then I went to the hobby shop and bought a spray paint can of CHROME paint (NOT silver). I patiently sprayed about 3 or 4 coats over a number of days and dried it really well between coats. Once I put the new lens on, the result looked pretty much like new (the housings themselves were decent). I didn't actually expect the chrome paint to last, but it really has lasted a long time and didn't burn off and didn't discolor. Anyway, think about it trying that before going for some other kind that won't look right. Be aware there are two different fog lights that came on 114s -- the earlier ones used a very large incandescent bulb. The later ones use a halogen (H4) bulb and are much brighter. I think the lenses are different, too. The one with the incandescent bulb had a sort of focusing screen at the bottom of the lenses, and the H ones just have straight ribs. I like the old lenses better but the new ones are much brighter, as I already said. Now that I think of it, I converted the old ones to new ones at some point. If you need the old ones I can send you what I have left over and you might be able to work something out. Worth a try. Catrinus 73 280C |

Also MB oursourced alot of their parts.... think in terms of Bosch electrics, VDO guages and Girling, Teeves, Bendix brakes etc.
The ribbed thin round original driving lights described by Catanus for the 114/115 sound like Hella mfg. to me. Google search Hella Driving Lights, I think for original equipment. Lucky for you the wiring is in place for the dashboard switch. |
