1963 220SE Fintail question

My "new" 1963 220SE fintail automatic emits a low moan when pulling out of the garage or parking. Is this noise mean trouble for the power steering pump?
Also, the engine has an annoying low, bass drone at mid RPM despite a new (not stainless) exhaust system. Any suggestions on making it quieter?
I have replaced trans and engine mounts, adjusted valves etc. Thanks td

Since moaning happens while pulling straight out of the garage, it might even be slipping fan belts. Try some belt dressing.

And when the tranny mounts were replaced, betcha they werent lined em up exactly with position of old mounts..... *any* vibration at all might come across as engine droning sound.

Moaning sound

I am sorry I didn't make myself clear. The sound I am describing occurs while I am turning the wheel several times at slow speeds (while leaving garage or parking). Does the power steering pump make a low groan normally or is this mean the pump needs a rebuild? thanks Chris

No problem, says me. If you cut many 1960's cars' steering wheels lock to lock with the cars standing still then power steering will typically groan, even squeel.

I think power steering first became an available option for MB no earlier than '63. My 190c didnt have power steering and the huge white ivory steering became wrestling match to turn unless the front wheels were rolling even a little bit. But I didnt care because it handled so well when driving.

Better stay on top of several grease fittings all over the steering rack, drive train, rear axle and suspension, though. That's the weak link on Finbody cars, NOBODY maintained lifetime suspension components with grease at least twice each year.

Dear Sir:
Thanks for the tip. I love the car, although the car is louder than I thought at highway speeds. I may opt for 14" wheels to lower the RPM's somewhat.
Thanks. See enclosed photos. Chris

Mine makes kind of a "whine" sound if I turn the wheel all the way. But when it's low on fluid, it will emit a LOUD groan! Make sure your fluid level is topped off. Sounds simple enough but it's often overlooked. I did mix half-and-half PS fluid + stop leak with ATF fluid in my PS system. It seems to work well and I haven't had to add fluid in a while!
