72 4.5 280sel HELP

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Got a fuel problem. Just picked up the car prvious owner said bad fuel pump> I replaced. Fuel system has appropriate 28 psi pressure. But wont start. If I dump gas in the throttle body it runs great as long as i keep pooring it in. I dont think the injectors are getting power. Also, I have the fuel pump hot wired as of now, I dont know if its getting power so I wire it 12 volts when I crank. Like i said 28 psi in the rails. Fuel goes all the way to the return line with great pressure ANY HELP specifically where relays or fuses are to check?

Lots of different things could be the culprit...

Check the trigger points on the distributor. Make sure the plug on the LH side of the distributor is in tightly and none of the wires are cracked (they're probably good if the outer plastic isn't hard and cracked). Check the injector grounds behind the battery. It could be a loose ECU plug or bad ECU - the ECU is on the left front, by the oil cooler. It has a rubber protective "boot" over it. Someone here probably could sell you a spare DJet ECU for a 4.5 cheaply.

Pulse a few injectors with 12v for a split second each, then try to crank it. If it seems to fire, then the injectors aren't getting power (the 4.5 will actually start and run on only one bank of cylinders, I've found that out before!). If no sign of life comes forth, then the injectors are clogged so badly, they're probably shot.

Since it doesnt seem to fire at all, it sounds like either a bad ground, or bad ECU, as the cold start valve would still open to allow some fuel in, if it were the trigger points. I've had mine "Almost" start with the trigger point plug off, from the cold start valve.

Well like I said it fires great if i poor fuel down the throttle body but yeah Im going to check those thigns and get back to you. The plug at the distributor is all cracked. But the wires seem to be intact. They guy is a friend, he told me it was gradually getting worse and worse and he though there was nasty **** in the gas. He put some kind of cleaner in the gas and it screwed up some part up front where the fuel line first comes in. I guess its the MAP or something like that, he replaced it. He thought the fuel pump was bad I guess and bought another one very excpensive. But I dont think it was the pump. Because I still dont think the pump is getting power thats why Im hot wiring it 12v. I hook up the pump constant feed, then crank the engine. I even leave it hooked up while I poor gas in the the throttle body hoppin it will get some fuel. When I took off the lines at the return regulator there was lots of pressure. So . I dont knwo

Ah, the joys of instant messaging...

He messaged me on AIM, just so you others know what he said that led me to suggest this:

warp0007: car ran and gradually got rougher

It makes me think the trigger points were fouling or getting worn beyond spec, until it finally became too much. Either that, or a dying/dead ECU?

I suggested to pull the distributor and clean the trigger points.

He signed off AIM before I could say this... I hope he doesn't use sandpaper to try to clean them, just a business card or the like! They're probably fouled with oil or some other junk.
