Two (related?) issues

I think I need a valve job. I've been putting it off because I keep thinking I'm going to get high-compression heads for my car, but I've yet to find a source for them.

Would having bad valves and/or guides and stem seals cause my oil to become diluted with gas?

I burn very little oil - smoke on startup and the first 2 blocks or so before the oil change, presumably because the thin oil went through the seals/guides.

If it's bad rings or a bad bore, why would I get oil dilution but not oil burning, fouled plugs, etc?

Also, would any members happen to have a "Spare" set of 3.5, or 8.8:1 4.5 heads?

Worn guides and seals would cause oil burning.
Oil dilution is usually due to a rich fuel mixture - perhaps lots of short-trip cold-weather driving or, possibly in your case, a FI malfunction or mis-adjustment. I've heard these 4.5 D-jets tend to run rich.

I've got the itch to do something with it...

Since I've been working, I haven't driven my car much at all lately. The more reasonable side of me has said "Why? You never drive your car as is" when I debate buying another car. I park my company truck out on the street in front of my house, and don't need to use my car at all (Although I am out of a truck now - the truck either took a direct or indirect hit from lightning last night, and the computer in it is screwed up now, it won't crank or anything).

So with my 4.5 sitting there, I figure now is a good time to get those heads into it and see what she can do. It's past the point of restoration, unless I have a really good reason to blow that much money on it. But I love the car and want it around for a long time... So I figure, if I just use it as my "tinkertoy" I can keep it around!

The oil diluting, though, drives me nuts. I want to put good oil in it, but I don't want to spend that much money on oil that will need to be changed out in 1-2k miles. So now, I just put Castrol 20w-50 in it (the only brand that had 20w-50 in conventional at Wal*Mart here). It runs super rich for the first few miles until it warms up. After that, I think it actually is a bit lean. I really think it has something to do with either the heads, or maybe the way the idle mixture is set.

My '60 Fintail 220S suffers oil dilution, especially in winter, due to frequent manual choke usage and (probably) rich idle settings to compensate for worn carb throttle shafts. Drain & refill is a piece of cake on this car. I run cheap Walmart-brand 20W50 and change it at 1500 miles. Always smokes on startup and sometimes when accelerating but otherwise, has maintaied decent oil pressure and performance for the 3 & 1/2 years I've owned it.
You may be able to lean out your FI a bit. Otherwise, if yours runs OK and doesn't foul plugs or consume lots of oil, don't sweat it, just change the oil more often.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Happy Motoring, Mark
