A/C help/advice

Folks: The car is a 74 280C.
When I bought it I was aware the compressor was seized.
I have an opportunity to pick up a reman compressor for a good price.
What I would like help with is; how can I check out the rest of the system? It would be nice to know if I only have to change the compressor, receiver/dryer, flush and refill. If I have a bad evaporator or other major components, it is probably not worth it for me to buy the compressor.

Can I pressurize the system with air?

The compressor is a reman, does that really mean anything?

P.S. I am a novice at a/c.

Thanks for any help.

I work mostly on home heat pumps and AC systems but the theory is the same.

Ambient air has humidity which is a no-no for AC systems. The system needs to be pressurized with nitrogen and leak tested that way. If it tests ok, you remove the nitrogen and draw a deep vacuum to remove any moisture. If the compressor has seized, there is a possibility that other components in the system can also be damaged or contaminated. Because of this, as well as the equiptment required to correctly pressurize & leak test, it usually is a job for the pros.

good luck
