extra wire 1972 300sel
I recently removed my battery tray to clean underneath it. while doing this I removed the battery ground and two clusters of ground wires to clean them as well. When I put everything back together,I was left with a black wire with a round connector just like the ground connectors.it has a white piece of rubber just below the connector that is possibly a color code.this wire comes out of the firewall with a group of wires, and can reach about as far as the last two- fuse connector on the firewall (there are four).why am I concerned? the car will not start.please help me.

Under the battery tray should be the two sets of grounds for the injectors.
By "not starting", you mean you can turn the key, but it acts like there is no gas, those grounds could cause that. To attempt to prove it, put a little starting fluid into the throttle and see if it runs for 2 seconds. with that wire dangling, it could be to anything. If you have a volt meter, look at the voltage between that wire and ground. If it reads the exact same thing as your battery with the ignition key in the ON position, but it's dead otherwise, then perhaps you have a problem. Connect it, through a fuse (just to be safe) to ground (an 8amp fuse should do) and try that again. If that fixes your problem (unlikely), remove the fuse and connect the thing to ground. The other possibility is that you immediately blow that fuse. That's a good reason not to connect that wire to ground. Doing so without the fuse could melt the wire and/or start a fire. -CTH |
