AC Condensate Leak 1972 280SEL 4.5

Hi All,

As you may recall I took the plunge and bought what I have now named the "Blue Baron", my midnight blue 280SEL 4.5.

When I bought it the AC was not working but that was quickly fixed by cleaning the contacts at the fuse block under the hood. Now, after it runs for a while I see the rug under the passenger footwell gets damp from dripping condensate from what looks like the bottom of the evaporator compartment (there is a cold pipe going into a plastic box). My question is, is my car missing some panel or insulation under there which would prevent this condensate from dripping down? It seems to form on the bottom of the plastic compartment and pipe.

I know these AC units were afterthoughts primarily for the US market, and seeing as how it works and was 90+ degrees here today I would like to use it but don't want to rot my rug in the process. Is my car missing something or do they all sweat like this and drop onto the rug?

Thanks..

The evaporator case is is two plastic halves that fit together around the evaporator & expansion valve. The seam should be sealed up so as not to leak. Also check the condensate runoff hose that is on the bottom left (trans hump side) of the evaporator case. This hose slips onto a metal fitting on the evaporator case and exits thru the floorboard at the trans hump. This drain hose from the evaporator case should drain off all condensate created by the system.
The only other place for water to condense is on the evaporator fittings that exit thru the firewall to connect with their hoses in the engine compartment. Those fittings are supposed to be insulated so they don't sweat with black cork tape or the like.
Check these things out and let us know what you find.

It must be the drain hose that I can see from the bottom exiting the side of the case then. I bet there is some gunk in there causing the water to pool in the case and it makes the case sweat and drain too slowly. Tomorrow I will explore it a little and see if I can clean it out. Thanks for the tips.
