1978 W116 Dash Speaker size?
I need to replace the dashboard speakers on the TOP of my 78 450 SEL dashboard. Can anyone tell me what size they are? Also, where can I buy a set. The old ones crackle and I have put an excellent CD receiver in the car; hence I need some new speakers.

I'm no sound tech or electrics genius...... but crackling could be ohm impedance variation between the speakers and your new cd player.
If it was me, I'd pull em both and live without the stereo until matched set the same size with proper ohms and wattage specs for the new system could be found - probably at any radio shack or audio tech boutique - with new cd player specs and old speakers in hand. |

No, they (actually only one) crackled before. One speaker is blown; I should have specified that before.

The front ones on the top of the dash for that year are 3 by 4s oval. I currently have a beautiful 4inch Infinity Kappa sitting in there, fits nice, and you just have to drill the holes to mount it and thats it.
Get rid of all the paper cones in that car. Your ears will thank you. Mine sure do. Peter |

Crutchfield
Have a look at the crutchfield site, you should have no shortage of speaker options there. They also have a pretty decent advise section. If your going to change the speaker, consider changing the cabling as well.

I bought a set of Alpin 5.25's for the back and a set of Alpine 4" speakers for the front dash top location. I also bought monster wire all around. As I had arm surgery a couple of weeks ago, I am having it installed by a friend (professional mobile audio installer) for a small nominal fee. He is going to bypass that damn fader wheel and get rid of the old wire in favor of the monster wire. It ain't quite up to ptoro's awesome sound system, but it will still be kickin!
BTW, thanks ptoro for the explicit advice regarding speaker sizes, etc.
