Due to the consistent demand over the last ten years I've watched it go from no options to one being able to buy darn near every part to BOLT IN a T5 trans now, and for a pretty reasonable cost at that. It was an effort on several people's part over a long time, and it took awhile to get cheap, but the demand was and likely will always be there. Car guys like manual transmissions, all there is to it. Mercedes knew this perfectly well as one could get such things in Europe, it was a marketing and monetarily motivated decision at the time I suppose not to offer them in the US. If a bunch of kids with Volvo's can overcome this, so can Mercedes guys.
I very nearly bought a 740 wagon that was running a 5.0 crate motor and a T5. Guy wanted what he had put into it when building it. I tried to tell him that $11,500 was a bit much for a used Volvo wagon. I offered something around $3800 and later heard that it sold for $4000.

Man, that car was fun to drive.

I like to tell my Volvo buddys this is because Mercedes got the majority of things right the first time.

But I agree. I just don't have the time or money to home-brew stuff for Mercedes without the community support the way I can with Volvo's. I sold a really really nice 300D years ago and sort of got away from Mercedes because at the time there were still not many people swapping in manual transmissions, and most swore you HAD to have that euro flywheel. I weighed the options, sold the 300D and bought a black 740 turbo wagon with a manual trans from the factory (that got the same MPG the 300D did btw, and was pretty quick).

BTW, 300 d manual for sale

Just thought of it as my daughter has a 1974 300D wagon that's pretty rusty but runs great and has a manual trans. It would be great for a conversion and have a spare motor....then trash what's leftover! It is located in Asheville, NC and parked for the winter as she drives a Subaru O/B in the winter months.

Heck I've gone so far as to consider putting the venerable redblock volvo 4 banger IN a Mercedes just to have it's manual trans options. It's such a rough little tractor motor though. This is what happens when you walk both sides of the tracks I suppose.
