So what do you do for an alda...and do you realize you run very high chance of wasting the engine....Crank isn't nitrided...no underpiston oil squirters....and a bunch of other stuff.

Diesel engine technology (turbo or not) of identical displacement with identical drive ratios ultimately can only achieve the same top speed. All the Turbo will do is get you there quicker.

My advice is buy a cheap motorcycle with the same money you'd spend on the conversion if you need genuine speed for racing around.

Well thanks for the info. If I need speed, I have an LS1 Trans am. Was just planning to run like 5 psi or so.

I pulled the whoe setup of an 81 300 turbo. Thought i might give it a try.

The turbo version OM117 engine has oil squirters at the bottom of the block that squirt oil up to cool the pistons. The crank is nitrated to take the additional stress. The pre chambers are larger and the injection pump is modified to add the extra fuel to go with the air. Yhe exhaust is also considerably larger in diameter. I go along with everyone else on this thread. I think you are wasting your time.

I agree with autozen. If you truely got the whole setup then it shouldn't take much more to get the engine. Or, since this isn't my car after all, try it and keep us posted.

Autozen, I would like to email you some pictures of the crank in my car. There is some funny discoloration that looks like oil in the light. Basically, it's purple there (like a rainbow). The discoloration is on the crank at the main bearings and at the rod bearings. However, there is no discoloration on the caps. I thought this might be a result of running without an oil cooler. Anyways, with your permission I'd like to take some pictures then email you. I have the pan off being replaced. (1987 300SDL).

Sorry for the hijack.

Thanks
David

EDIT, autozen. It appears I can't send you an email through the forum. I'm starting a thread in diesel discussion and will PM you a link to there so that you can see them.

Thanks
David

Hey if you insist on doing this you have to promise to take detailed pictures and post them when it blows up......just so the next guy who has this idea has a visual cue why its not a good idea.

Pswah.
I ran a '80 300D with an aftermarket turbo... it'd been installed (a nice RayJay unit) when the car was new... the car had 243K when I sold it. Now, a turbo on an old 220D or something... or driving like a ricer... ymmv. Not an expensive worst case scenario, even. Any news? Is it done?

Total Turbo

Just happened to see this used Turbo engine on eBay last night - if you're anywhere in the vicinity of Miami, Flawhdah...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mercedes-300SD-Turbo-Diesel-Complete-Engine-Assembly_W0QQitemZ7991030014QQcategoryZ33615QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Dunno which will fit into yer chassis with a minimum of adaptation -
I'm a gasser, myself - need to ask some oilers, out there...

BTW, welcome back, BHD!

It'd be nice to know if he did the mod or not, and if he did, if his engine is still running fine or what.

Stan: I don't quite think BHD is back, judging by the date on those posts
