Going through the old paperwork that came with my car, I found a bill for replacement of a hydropneumatic compensator. I was under the impression that I did not have one of these, unless I have my parts mixed up. (it is late for me, so maybe my brain isn't up to par) This part was not cheap...$465.62 and that was in '87!
So, ...what the heck is it? Am I going to have to go out there with a flahlight and see if I have hydro suspension? Would this be described as "Load Leveler" on the window sticker?
And, I also thought I read in other posts about differentials, but I do not remember if it was common or uncommon to have a limited slip. Anybody know?

Thanks! -Larry

Larry,

The hydropneumatic compensator is a part of the rear suspension. Apparently there are two types, steel spring (which is what is on mine) and the hydropneumatic compensating spring (Boge strut). This spring/compensator is mounted on the rear axle one end secures somewhere at the top of the rear diff, the other connects to the right side of the swing arm.

The manual doesn't break down which type spring is used on which models. If you have the MB manual for the 108/109/111/113 you'll find the info in section 32-7.

BTW shouldn't you be hitting the rack, it's getting way late in FL .

Yeah, but, but, I just had to find out!

And now I do! After looking in the manual, and checking out the pictures, I have come to the conclusion that I have the Boge strut. Well, actually I ran outside with a flashlight and looked! I had to chuckle at what this must have looked like to the neighbors....guy runs out with flashlight, looks under rear of car and says "aha!" and then runs back inside the house.
ok ok I'll go to bed now.

-Larry <--reminding himself to buy new flashlight batteries for the next time that he has to look at something at 1:45 in the morning.

While some cars came from the factory with the strut and others with the spring (you'll have to check the TDM to which is which), it is perfectly acceptable to interchange them. Though I presume that the quality of the ride suffers a bit when you use the spring though.
