Just thought I'd share this. My horn has been nonfunctional since purchase; the PO disconnected it after screwing up the steering column bushings so that it sounded continuously.
Of course, I'm going to fix it correctly in the future, but my immediate need is to have a working horn to pass the NC safety inspection. And because their guidelines don't say anything about it other than "the horn button [should be] mounted securely and in a position which is easily accessible to the driver", I got a little redneck today.
With some 16GA zip cord, I ran a single line from the battery's positive terminal, through an inline fuse holder with a 5A fuse, to a terminal on the top horn. I ran a double line from the top horn to the bottom one to wire them in parallel. Then I took another double line, attached one side to the mounting bolt for the top horn and the other to the other terminal on the top horn. I ran that double line through a grommet in the firewall near the steering column, and soldered on a momentary switch. Finally, I tucked that switch into the elastic that holds on the temporary lamp that lights up the front of the instrument cluster (since I haven't gotten around to fixing that yet either!
). All the wire runs are tied down securely with cable ties.
Took about 30 minutes, and the end result is that I have a functional horn that will get me through inspection until I get around to fixing things the right way. Woot!
