Another ? - W113 radios this time

Hi all!
I have the original radio for the 230SL 1967 and it seems appropriate to put back in after sending to Becker for ma restoration. Can you tell me about other options you might have done, such as is there someone who adapts the old radios to run a hidden CD changer? How about speakers?

Unless someone has a great idea they have tried I may just have Becker restore the radio and reinstall it and use a new OEM center speaker.

Thanks again,

thanks again arthur, you are very helpful.
i was looking at a posting you made describing the conversion from points to optical, etc for w113. i didn't understand any of it, but it sounds like a good thing to do!

happy 4th!

Yes .. a point conversion is probably the best performance for the $$$ one can make on these mechanical FI chassis... the Injection requires a rock steady ignition which just can't be gotten from a point system, so this upgrade will get these running better than when they were new. I am not an advocate of making lots of changes to my 113s , but there are a few updates that just were not avilable at that time frame and are short $$$ for the newer technologies.
The main considerations on 113s are lighting upgrade to H4 if car already has Euro tungstun, point conversion with later RED coil, and Tunes Equipment..
The later high torque starters and higher amp alts are all drop in also and bring these cars up to date.. they were well equipped for the time with the four wheel individual susp., FI, OH cam, and power disc ...to name a few..
Still stand out in the crowd.

Arthur:

Thanks for info on important upgrades to do. I plan to do them all.

The points and starter will be first.
Can you tell me about the red coil, is this pertronix? Should I do the crane? I am not a mechanic, so I may have a mechanic do this, but the ************** (which I have used several times for my diesel w123) has a kit with manual for making the conversion to crane for the w113s. Here is the link... Do you think this is worth trying myself? The car runs pretty well right now.

I can't find the Crane on that site, The red coil is a Benz product , but the early 113s coil is good enough for the Crane.
The unit is a little tricky for a novice , where the Pert is simple.. I just don't like the Tert b/c it is Hall Effect and does not have as clean and as strong a sig as the optical. Specially at start-ups..

Do a search over at the 113 group and there are many opinions on each...

more on Pertronx v. Crane

Just a note of caution: the Crane will not work on the early Bosch distributors (confirmed this after ordering and attempting to install. Crane is aware of this and if I had been careful and supplied the distributor number they would have warned me off of the purchase). With some griding it will fit, but I opted for plan B which was Pertronix. Very happy, it is the only upgrade I would ever make to the 230sl and it makes a huge difference.

Thanks again to the board for all the great advice,

g

Becker restoration

I am not an electrical engineer, in fact I do home electrical repairs only with heavy gloves on ...but I restored my Europa without any problems. Just took it apart and cleaned it, replaced all but one of the tubes (could not locate one from the many radio parts suppliers on the net), sent the bezel to the rechromer and voila, it sounds like new. Not great, just new (what with the whopping 3W mono output from the separate amplifier, what do you expect).

Best of luck
