Question of fit: W113 Speedo
Can anyone please answer this puzzler: I have a W113 speedo. It is the model with the cable entering on the passenger side of a Left Hand Drive model. Unfortunately, my car is a very early 230sl requiring the speedo that has the cable entering on the driver side. Now, for $64,000 and the win: will this speedo fit a 1970 280sl WITH RIGHT HAND DRIVE?
Here's hoping for an answer, and thanks, g

My books list no dif. in speedo, r/l hand drive.
They list r/l speedo cable, auto or manual specific.. The speedo has 6 versions , but that is determined by mph or km/h , and differential ratios. Tach cable is also l/r specific Last edited by Arthur Dalton; 07-10-2005 at 10:44 PM. |

Arthur,
Thanks, would it be safe to assume that the left or right entry of the cable is related to whether the transmission is manual or auto and not, as I assumed, related to the year of the car? Live and learn. Hope you survived the floods, Dennis did some major damage even here in Atlanta, g

The post is a little confusing in the sense that you use Left and Right , but then you refer to drivers side . "Drivers Side" is dependant on if the car Is RHD or LHD , so you want to use L/R as taken from drivers seat position/orientation , and forget rhd/lhd except for part # ID. The cable routing is not different from auto/stick as to which side it enters ,it is just that a manual cable is different from an auto cable . The r/l firewall routing differs with RHD and LHD . so a RHD or a LHD will have specified cables differing from each other , but each will also have a manual OR an auto cable . { ie: } If one was to order a new cable , he would have to specify RHD or LHD AND manual OR auto in order to get the correct cable .. this has nothing to do with the speedo, as they are sperate parts. Dennis did not do much here , but I lost a modum board in my PC from lightning .. which it is doing right now...... |

Sorry for the confusion, but you have set it straight. The speedo has the receiver for the cable on the right hand side (from perspective of sitting in the car and with speedo installed). Therefor I assume this speedo is correct for a RHD model. Sorry 'bout the modem. But count your blessings. A house 150 yds from me burned to the ground, the fire had the entire property fully involved within 7 minutes! Our fire department believes the lightening entered through the satellite dish and spread to every junction box in the house...instantly. No hope of saving it or any of the trees within 50 yards. Luckily no one was home. The real loss was the ferrari BB12 parked in what used to be a garage. I guess that is what insurance is for. g
