engine shock?
Hi guys,
I was ordering some engine mounts from a place online and I saw that for my w111 250sec they were selling engine shocks...I don't see that I have one. Am I missing it somewhere? My manual dosen't mention it anywhere...somethings fishy. thanks, opossum

The only 'shock' that goes on the later 250/280's is a dampener that mounts under the front of the engine. It bolts into a triagular plate mounted to the passenger side and the top of the dampener mounts I think to the side of the engine just below the alternator. Its about 8 inches long by about 1 inch in dia or there abouts

I know a '72 280SEL has them as well as the diesel models. I'm not sure if your car has them or not. From what I've seen they're usually right next to the mount. They're a small shock absorber that dampen the last jolt the engine gives before it stops. You notice bad engine shocks more on diesels for obvious reasons.
Thanks David

Wait a minute - am i the only one slapping his knee here laughing out loud that 'engine shock' is probably the first worthless over-engineered item that trespassed into Vintage MB's along with hood pads to quiet engine noise?
Hell yes there's something fishy here - beauty of Vintage MB's is what the cars do NOT have attached to them as worthless junk..... instead just the finest craftsmanship in simple perfected design. Possum, I'll betcha the parts catalogue on your 250SECoupe doesnt show 40% of parts included on later models. And the 250SEC is probably the last old fashioned Benz Coupe that's entirely bereft of weird gadgets and gizmos, built on old world principles of craftsmanship instead. |

I'm with ya dieseldog! It is half the reason I love this car. It is also the reason I loved my "60 ford half ton...damn, I shouldnt have ever sold that..It even had the original tubed radio (which I love now) However, I HAVE noticed an extra mount with nothing on it that is right below the alternator. I guess that is where it originally was if I ever had one. When I saw it, it seemed very extraneous and out of place. Anyhow, thanks guys.

Was thinking the other day to take out the shock and replace it with a large threaded bolt, proper length, couple of regular and reversed nuts, reuse the shock rubber and have a nice engine brace.
When I had my Rx-7 my favorite 60 spent was on a RB engine brace kit which did what I mentioned, ****ing motor wouldn't shake at all, felt like the car was flying no engine vibration. Any thoughts?

These engines need more 'give' than a rotary.
Better off without the engine shock, than installing a rigid bolt in it's place, which will reduce the effectiveness of the motor mounts! Happy Motoring, Mark
