You might want to look at one of the 114/115 series cars from 68-72, with the nice small bumpers. They are classified as the /8 series cars and represent perhaps some of the best engineering, quality and performance (relatively speaking) ever done by MB for their bread and butter cars. For example, the basic chassis and suspension is identical to that found under my 350SL.

There are a lot of /8s still around, many have been very well maintained and mechanics are still pretty savvy about how to work on them. They have great suspension, reasonable power if gas-fired and have the classic Mercedes look about them. Also, you could join the Mercedes Benz Club since that was one item of interest (clubs) that you mentioned.

You can also plan to do a bit of learning about the marque and mechanics in general by performing some of your own maintenance, and in this respect, this forum and your club affiliation will be helpful.

Just a thought,

230/8

Thanks 230/8 for the info. I'll look into /8's. I got a book about Mercedes cars and I'm slowly learning about engines and what makes cars go, mostly from the Internet.

If you are into research, look into Frank Barrett's book on Mercedes, available from Toad Hall for about $20. Also, check the MB Classic website and their literature. There is a publication called Mercedes Classic available through the center. Last year there was a great article on the /8s, it was the cover car.

These little cars are considered modern classics in europe and good examples are pricey. A 250C is very stylish and a plain-jane /8 four door sedan is a great road machine suitable for a family with kids. Huge trunk and great room inside. Safe as your living room.

Cheers,
