Really frustrated! - Trying to remove water pump

What should have been a straightforward, relatively easy job (and probably is for most people) has turned into a mess! I can not get the four small bolts loose that attach the fan assembly to the water pump - one is loose the other 3 are ridiculously tight and are now rounded off. I couldn't get the closed end of a box wrench on the bolt heads - no clearance. I've tried some needle nose vise grips but they just slide.

I've thought about trying to cut the bolts, or even through the water pump or the water pump shaft, but I don't think/know if I have the room.

Is there a way to remove the fan and fan clutch from the shaft? That way I could at least get to the 4 botls head on.

Any other suggestions?

BTW, 1972 250.

Thanks, ryan

Go buy a cheap, or expensinve, box wrench. Grind the end of the closed end box wrench so that it will fit over the bolt. Your thining the wall of the wrench so it will fit between the bolt and fan hub. This will be your fan box wrench.
Since you rounded the bolt heads. You only did it on the flats you were trying to use. If you grind the box end so the wall is thin. You wil be able to grab the non rounded points and remove the bolts. The rounded over points may have to be smoothed so the wrench can fit over the bolthead.

A big thanks to Dave (dmorrison)!

Your suggestion worked perfectly and I was able to complete the job tonight w/o too much more trouble. Got everything back together - no leaks (at least so far). Appreciate the help!

Actually this can be a very common problem.
Since the majority of people, myself included, usually use the open end of the wrench. It's common to round them off. I finally ground one of my cheap wrenches down. If I could just get a Gear Wrench ground down to fit. The 5 degree ratchet mechanism would really help.

I hope you installed new bolts. Since the old ones were rounded off.
Think about the future jobs that will require removing the fan.

Actually, only one bolt was rounded and it came off pretty easy with the closed end - they were just really tight and I was being careful NOT to round them off.

Anyway... everything is back together with no leaks, but one question - the car is running a little hotter than before. It looks like around 185 - 195. Before, it got a little cooler while I was driving and the gauge would creep up some while idling - doesn't really do that now. Stays pretty much halfway between the 175 line and the next line - clearly not overheating, but just wondering why it might be a little hotter now??

Maybe, new water pump not circulating as much (Geba, Made in Germany)? I also replaced the thermostat but with the same temp setting.

Ryan
