Maybe new replacement seals arent as chemical sensitive as the originals, dunno but I wouldnt take the chance.

I think itsa question of chemical engineering where MB nylon(?) steer box seals dont like fancy additives...... same as finbody asbestos rope engine seals work best with non-detergent oil and always leak with sythetics, or same as MB hydraulic rubbers not likin DOT 3 fluid.

Steering gear

This is something which I should add to the steering gear discussion. I loosened the steering wheel to move it up out of the way to reinstall the steering gear and when I tried to push it down to the original position it wouldn't go. I fiddled around for some time when I thought that maybe the steering lock pin was holding it out so I turned the key and sure enough, the shaft dropped down to where it should be. Somewhere I read that to break the nut loose on your steering shaft you should turn the wheel to its extremities to stop it from turning. I thought this worth repeating. Milt.
