mercedes benz w116 6.9 steering knock

During braking I get a pretty sever vibration that i am trying to solve. However that aside I get what appears to be a knocking sound from the steering arm. You can hear it when you shake the steering left to right like the arm is beating aganst the body or something. Any W116 owners experienced this?

Any ideas?

howdy,

well I have the answers for this one... The vibration during braking is your rotors are warped. As you seem to want to keep the car for a long long while I would do a full brake service. On mine I waited till the master cylinder went out which was kinda scary. At this point, thats something I would replace just as a piece of mind item.

The steering clunk is from your steering coupling. I had the same thing happen. That got fixed last and really tightened up the steering. Its between the steering column and the box. I did my steering dampner, ball joints and a few items in the steering so now it feels nice other than for the leaky and loose steering box in there.

Take care,
Peter

Brakes are done

Brake Pads , Disks and Bearing have been done. The Steering needs to be looked at.

What do you suggest on the bushing side. I am trying to complile a shopping list. Advise would be appreciated.

Al, have you had the car suspended while turning the wheel to see if anything is moving that shouldn't be moving?

Fred
