Substantial Oil Leak on 108
After a brief drive today, realized somthing was up** and parked it. From near the filter housing, a good amount of oil was dripping out. Loosened and retightened the housing, no change. Had a puddle of oil after a minute or so. Oil pump seems ok, will replace the pump mounting gasket for kicks. Been too freaked out with the quantity of (10-day old!) oil to poke my head under while she's running. All fittings and hoses seem ok. This was a not an oil drip and much as a slow drain.
**However, just before heading out, I dumped a 1/4 quart of ATF in the gas tank. The 109 board participants swear by using ATF as a fuel additive to clean out the fuel system. Is this oil leak possibly a result of this? All ideas appreciated. |

The fuel system is not responsible for your oil leak........

If it's from the housing, are you sure it isn't cracked? Are you sure the proper-sized O-Ring is in there, and in properly?
The oil coolant lines all are in that area. as much as you don't want to, you probably need to put the front end up on a ramp or something SECURE and look under it CAREFULLY while it's running to see where it's leaking from. I'd say it could be the valve cover gasket, but almost anywhere that could leak, it'd leak out onto the exhaust and produce smoke. Less likely is the timing chain tensioner (if something snapped it though...) Edit: I assume you mean a 4.5 (as most 109's are 4.5's, so if you're reading that forum...). If you mean a 6-Cyl, then ignore me~ And be more specific

Previous thread on similar issue
During the oil filter replacement, I failed to notice that part #44 was missing on my W114, M130.92 engine. Took a while, but the Oil filter housing cracked and I lost most of the engine oil. Apparently, part #44 also acts as a spacer, preventing contact between the filter housing and the base mount.
The p/n's for rubber filter elements are: #42 is 000 184 1780. #43 is 000 184 3280 #44 is 000 184 3380 See previous thread for picture. http://www.peachparts.com/shopfor...d.php3?t=101817 3 sets of these parts cost $28.08 at the dealer.

Thanx guys. Car is a 2.8L 6-cylinder 280s. Filter housing is intact, the o-ring at the housing lip and the 3 other rubber filter items are in place and in good shape. Leak seemed to be in the oil pump/ filter area, so will jack it up and report back after replacing the oil pump gasket.
