Double bumper assembly?

I was waxing my 63 220 SEb which recently had its bumpers rechromed. I noticed that the upper and lower bumpers are bolted together and are touching metal to metal. Is this normal or is there supposed to be some sort of rubber/nylon washer seperating the two pieces?

Greg, are you talking 2 pieces or 4?

I once wrangled with bumper on 220Sb and recollect there being alloy spacers between the top sections and the bottoms.

Diesel,
I am referring to 4 pieces when we include the front and rear bumpers. That would be the base bumper and the small bumpers above. I suspected they must have been designed with a spacer between to eliminate rubbing and trapping water leading to later rust onset. I saw some nylon washers in the ACE Hardware store bins that may be a better substitute than metal alloy.

And they were sloped, those alloy spacers. You might have to file the nylon washers to hang the top bumper bits straight.

Just checked one of my spare Fintail bumpers, from a '66 230S, and there are spacers. Mine appear to be steel, 1/8 inch thick and they're flat, not 'sloped'.

Happy Motoring, Mark

There is a 1/8 inch spacer between the top and lower. Its very important to have it as it allows air to circulate between the chrome pieces so they don't rust. You can use a plastic, stainless steel or rubber spacer whatever you prefer. Congratulations on the chrome job. While your putting those spacers on, pull the bumper and use a rust preventer. Go to a specialty automotive paint store and get a can of it and then paint the insides of your chrome. The quality of chrome jobs has been going downhill If you get 5 years without rust your doing good. Mine look fantastic until you get up close and you see the rust breaking through. So any little bit of protection will make them last longer

That is helpful information that you won't find in a manual. I know what my weekend project is. Thanks Gents.

Chrome work

The chrome work for my cabriolet was done locally here in Salt Lake City.
It involved most of the exterior chrome, i.e., front & rear bumpers, interior and exterior rocker panels, window surround moldings. The taillights, headlights, grille and door handles were not included as they were in good shape. The bill was $2K.
