77 450 Se

Just bought a 77 450 SE. It has been setting for 3 years. I Can't get it to start. fuel pump was bad and replaced. the hose that comes out of the bottom of the fuel damper is pouring out gas. Is it supposed to do that? I dont really know that much about cars . any help appreciated!!!

What part are you referring to being the "fuel damper"? There should be no fuel leaks of any kind since that is an extreme fire hazard. The fuel pump should be under the car forward of the rear axle.

Change the oil/filter. Change the fuel filters. Transmission fluid. Brake Fluid. Depending on how much gas it in the car you'll want to make sure there is enough premium gas in it since the octane level is probably too low to start the engine. Inspect the belts as well since they are likely degraded.

I am not sure if 3 years is long enough to perform the ATF application to the pistons so that the rings don't crack on startup. Anyone want to chime in on that one?

starting dead auto

Most of the observations are OK, however, low octane gas 87 is usually easier to start than high! A squirt into the spark plug holes with light oil before attemptimng to start is a good idea. PUtting a small amount of gasoline into fuel horn can help. If spark exists, and fuel pump connections ok, this should a least turn over engine. You take it from there, with plugs, ignition wires, etc. good luck, Abe G

the hose off the bottom of this is pouring out gas. Does that mean its bad? someone told me air was supposed to be going into the hose, not gas coming out. they said the gas should be coming out the side hole. the hose is unplugged and i dont know where it goes. it was leaking all over the engine.

do you mean that the hose is leaking or is the fitting leaking or is it the damper? you say hose, so my guess is that you need a new hose.

I think gas SHOULD be going through the threaded connections and the top fitting is for an air line. Between the air and gas chambers (or showers, as they were known in Germany) is a rubber diaphragm. There should be no communication between the two chambers.

I can't tell if you are asking about a hose leaking (fix the hose) or the fuel damper is leaking (replace the damper)

either way, gas leaking onto the engine is known in the mechanic trade as a 'bad' thing

Ok, The hose leading into the top of it is coming from the fuel distributer. the hose coming off the side is connected where it is supposed to be to my best guess, the hose coming out of the bottom however is not damaged but it is not where it is supposed to be. it was just laying across the engine, spurting gas. someone told me that the one coming out of the bottom is the vaccum line, and should be sucking air in and not shooting gas out. Im just trying to figure out if they are wrong or if the damper is bad and i need a new one. Thank you for the help! the damper seems in nicer conditon and is not leaking anywhere but the hose.

THE AIR CONNECTION FOR THE DAMPER AND GAS CONNECTION FOR THE DAMPER oops cap lock off
are of different diameters and it should be clear which hose fits which

I was saying top side and bottom based on the picture. the ports may be oriented differently when installed on the car

the picture has two large diameter, which should be fuel and one small diameter which should be vac.

the one laying across the engine spurting fuel ought to go to the large diameter connection on the damper, right?

I am trying to understand.

But..

If the small diameter connection is spurting gas out, not sucking air in, then it sounds to me like the diaphragm that separates the vac side from the fuel side is ruptured.

okay i re-read your last post one more time.

if the small diameter hose is spurting gas then i think you need a new damper.

the damper 'halves' are supposed to be separated. top gas bottom vac.

gas from top is leaking thru the diaphragm to the bottom which it shouldn't
