1969 300 Sel 6.3
Hello
I found an archived post at http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/sitemap/3/t-3404.html that led me to this forum. I do have a 1969 300 SEL 6.3, dark blue, 90k miles, very good condition, in Denver, driven briefly monthly One previous owner (my dad) kept meticulous service records and has service manuals $3000 worth of service last year incl new fuel pump, front suspension struts, ignition coil, brake shoes, 4 michelin tires, I see on NADA that an average price is $13,150 and high is $20,100 and it should be fairly valued somewhere in the middle Can anyone recommend where to go for me to unload this without giving it away? Thanks much, Rick Meyer |

Try the M-100 group
The M-100 group (www.m-100.cc) has a new classifieds section, you may want to post there.

Looks like a great site - thanks
I am preparing my ad, so far I have: ============================================== 1969 300 SEL 6.3, dark blue, 90k miles, very good condition, in Denver, driven briefly monthly VIN 10901812000880 No rust A/C needs a recharge New air bags have been installed for the air suspension I have been advised that the faint scratches on the dark blue paint (over the years) can easily be buffed out. One previous owner (my dad) kept meticulous service records and has service manuals $3000 worth of service last year incl new fuel pump, front suspension struts, ignition coil, brake shoes, 4 michelin tires, brake fluid change, oil chg w/filter, fuel filter I see on NADA that an average price is $13,150 and high is $20,100 and it should be fairly valued somewhere in the middle ========================================== Any suggestions on additional info (or edit what I have)? Thanks, Rick |

Rick
Try cross posting to the www.m-100.cc there are many helpful 6.3 owners who will ask the right questions and be able to give you an accurate price on what your car is worth.
Good luck

advice?
1. Drive the car. These machines don't like to sit and buyers are leery about cars people are afraid to drive. 2. Photos, lots of photos. Your "no rust" clause means no visible rust as well as no underside rust. These are unibody cars. A little underside rust goes a long way to a high repair bill. Get it up on a lift, the kind that supports the wheels, not the frame and take pictures down there. 3. Visit ebay. Look at *ALL* the 6.3's that have sold in the past three months. That will give you an idea of the market. 4. Ditch the NADA portion of the ad. That price data is not relevant to what somebody will pay. 5. If those scratches can buff out, get them buffed out. -CTH |

I echo all of CTH's comments, especially the one about the NADA prices. If you are expecting to see anywhere near $20K for it you might be in for an unpleasant surprise. My recently purchased 108 came with a portfolio of receipts dating back to 1987 with over $45,000 worth of work having been done in that time and over $10,000 just in the last 2 years/10K miles for new tranny and front and rear end complete rebuilds. The seller had it on ebay for several tries with the last one having an opening bid of $6K with a reserve and a buy it now of $8K. I paid $7,000 for the car and probably paid too much but I enjoy the car and love driving it so I don't really mind, but the book value means nothing as mine would book at 2X what I paid and I could probably not even get what I paid for it back if I had to sell it.
I try to put 50-100 miles a week on it and the more I drive it the better it drives. And finally...none of them have "no rust". It's there, you just have to know where to look (and poke) for it.

1. I did inspect carefully and underneith for rust and found none- Are they not all heavily undercoated? 2. mentioned the interior 3. mentioned the power accessories 4. Took out the faint scratches remark because they are almost invisible 5. Put in a narrative about running the car long distance 6. Be sure to state "No Sunroof" to prevent all those idiots from calling you - the ones for whom lack of a s/r is a deal breaker.
You also fail to give any indication of what needs fixing, either for cosmetic purposes or to make it a perfect car. For example, how is the wood? Chrome? If it is a nice looking and roadworthy car with no obvious flaws, then state "needs nothing". For those other imperfections, it's always nice to add "requires XYZ to become a concours condition vehicle", which gives potential buyers a chance to assess what it will take moneywise to satisfy their requirements. Please take some pictures and make them available. There are several experts available here that may assist in the sale of the car.
Chassis number 880 is low and early and has higher performance than the later models. Here is an interesting link: Engine Rebuild on 6.3 and another: 1970 300sel 6.3 6.3 vs 4.5 vs 3.5

squasher: thank you - I will add
Roadworthy and looks great - needs nothing wbain5280: Yes you are correct the parts on the vehicle could easily be worth more than $15,000 Brand new fuel pump cost me $1000 A replacement engine (from mercedes) is $25000 Peter Leinen owner of German Auto Center in San Antonio informed me of that. Incidently he is a top mechanic and still a German citizen who could give any prospective buyer an unbiased opinion. I am on my sister to send email me photos. I live in Hawaii, she is in Denver where I have centrally located the vehicle. |

$15,000 is pretty top-dollar for a used 6.3. I sold mine for over $18K earlier this year but it had 60K original miles, paperwork and records, and had been worked on by a mechanic who only works on M-100 cars. I was very lucky to get that for the car, but it was 100% mechanically sorted, and I was ANAL with the description of the car. Even then, I waited perhaps 18 months to sell the car.
You can see my description of the car on the "FOR SALE" bulletin board at http://www.m-100.info eBay provides the best "real" gauge of market prices these days. Most decent 6.3s I see, tend to go for $10-15,000 dollars. And 90% of 6.3s out there have rust; suspension problems (if the suspension goes down in less than 1 month, it is defective); fuel injection problems, and suffer from a general lack of driving and maintenance. Good luck with your sale !! Cheers, Gerry |
