Jacket: It may be worth doing a road test, but Tomguy's comments are to the point for US versions of these cars. It would be unusual for your car to have a four-speed, but I suspect it would not be impossible.

Tomguy: You might want to look at this thread, it deals with the four-speed automatic trans in an early euro-107SL.

230/8: Ok then, only early m116's, 3.5's (111, 107, maybe 108 and 109?) had a fluid-coupling 4-speed auto. ALL 4.5's had a torque-converter 3-speed, and 3.5's were married to this tranny around the time the 4.5 came out.

Ok - test results - in "2" the car does not shift on its own, in "3" the car does not shift on its own, in "4" the car does not shift into a higher gear. - given all the other clues and comments in this thread, I am still convinced its a three speed.

With all the speculation about my having a four speed tranny because of the shift indicator in the dash, ala European version - would the other indicators still be "P", "R", and "N" ? Hard to believe the letters match their equivalent in another language.
