Horn Honks when I turn the Wheel
I've found a few mentions on this in the archives, but no real comprehensive fix for it. My horn honks in one or two different positions of the steering wheel in reverse only. It started about a day ago, and is intermittent. So, it therefore must have something to do with the position of the shifter.
If I remove the horn pad, what is under there? How do I get to the electrical contacts for the horn? The car is a 108 chassis. Thanks!

On the old fashioned steering wheel its a brass ring and button combo activated by pressing the chrome horn ring. Not uncommon for the the horn ring to require cardboard shims after awhile. The center pad pulls straight off 3 ribbed plastic dowels underneath.
But when you say "horn pad" it sounds like the newer model steering wheel, dunno about them. |

That's the one, with the center pad and the dowels, and it rattles all the time. I'll take it apart this morning and see what I can find.

I think I got it fixed. I had to remove the sterring wheel by removing the center pad and removing the hex nut on the splined steering shaft. This exposes the ring contacts for the horn. The shifter rod seemed to have enough play in it that it could come forward enough to short the horn contacts together while in reverse. I fixed this by painting the end of the shift rod with two coats of POR-15 as an insulator. I chose this paint just because I had some around and it drys hard quickly with a very hard smooth surface. So far, this has eliminated the problem, though I will replace the rubber shifter bushing and coat the shift rod end with epoxy should the problem reoccur.
