I am currently figuring out whether or not I should restore my vehicle as original, or try swapping out various drivetrain components for a more reliable/powerful driver with a classic body. Either way, the expense will be pretty sizeable, so either way will be carried out over a few years time.

It seems to me that this is a rather Purist group, so instead of debating the goods and the bads of either direction, I would instead like to ask whether or not Anyone has seen or heard of swaps being completed, either with a 6 or 8-cyl gas engine or a newer diesel. I am aware that any such mods may require extensive subframe/drivetrain/electrical craziness.

If you have direction to various links, contacts, books, or magazines, they would be greatly appreciated, but I'd even like to explore decent guesses - please feel free to make suggestions!!

I looked through all the stuff I have and checked the Adsit site, and did not find a 110 chassis. Was 1967 the last of the "finbacks?"

Actually, 1968 was the last year of the Fintail, However I believe production figures were very low, something like 1300 vehicles (inclusive of all models) as opposed to 120,00 in 1967.

If you could also check your sources for the w111 and w112 body, I would be appreciative, as all of these models were "Fintails" They shared many of the same systems - however, the biggest difference of this era of cars is the discrepancy between the Gas six cyl cars and the 4 cyl gas, diesels. The Noses on the 4-cyl cars were shorter by a few dozen centimeters

I did a little surfing and found a neat site called http://www.mercedesveterans.com. There is a 'history' page with pictures and other information about models back to the 1950's. Now at least I know what a W110 is.

The W110 apparently also came as a 230, which should tell you that a gas engine would theoretically work. Every inline MB that I have ever seen has had side mounts on the engine and a center mount for the transmission. If yours is like this, there is hope.

I have seen MB hot rods advertised from time to time: a 6.3 in a 220 coupe (entire drive train), and a 6.9 in a 350SLC. There was a 250C with a Chevrolet V8 last month in Hemmings and one on e-Bay (may have been the same one) about six months ago. There was a really neat-sounding one where someone had put together a 300SL from parts and installed a M103 (300e) engine and 5-speed.

The early Euro-tuners have done some others.

So it is possible, but I have never seen kits like those offered for the XKE's nor have I seen any sustained interest in doing swaps.

My $.02 worth is that it is quite doable and probably best done on an entire driveline basis. The market for such cars is thin to non-existent, so you would definitely be doing it for the fun of it.

I am personally considering a long range plan putting the engine and 5-speed from my 1986 300E into my 1972 250C project car. But don't tell my wife.

Good luck.

For whatever it's worth, I am reasonably sure that a 220D engine would drop right in there. The last few 200D's and the first few 220D's had bad metal in the blocks. The compression would be gone in about 100,000 miles as the cylinders would wear out in an egg-shaped pattern. This was a pretty common swap in the early 70's. I used to have a 200D. Great car. Very simple to maintain. Wish I still had it.

I bet I forgot to point you here...

We're not purists here. Check the archives for the fellow that upgraded his 300sd to ford power.
