Thanks for the compliment, I am the man . I do have a job that fortunately begins early and ends not too late. I also have three ladies (one wife , two teenagers) in the house that work horses every day till sundown and beyond.Farm chores at a minimum right now because winter has slipped in, leaving me with a bit more free time. I just slip out to the garage and piddle, always at their beckon call As long as they know where to find me....
An old car, turning wrenches, tunes playing, it does not get much better than that.......... , unless of course we all lived next door to each other, with an all night parts store down the street!.

OK , since there seems to be a general lack of interest on re packing the rear bearings I am going to assume that the reason is that most feel it is not necessary. I agree with you Mark, leave em alone.... I am getting new rear rotors, will adjust parking brake and put her back together. I do not see any grease seepage out of the seals or around the axle.

Well the rear calipers seem to be frozen so I will need to rebuild or get replacements, She is coming along nicely, basically a bunch of nuts and bolts thrown around the garage, with parts in boxes and a lot of loose material thrown about. I was able to replace some brake lines today and take the instrument cluster out.
I am having a ball
I think.................

Something new

Because it is getting cold here I had a few minutes , OK hours, to create my very own family album. I hope you enjoy it, I will add to it as the days go by. After I sat and looked at these pictures I realized that I am in over my head and a really sick man, or that I am just another crazed MB fanatic.
Take a look, I will be updating from time to time

Boned it down to a basket-case?

Those 1971 seats are major asset, BTW, 114/115's changed from massive upholstery to thin floppy seats circa 1973. Something to do with flamable glue holding horse-hair together that made em a hazard because of 1 in million chance they'd burst into flames and scorch the driver.

Hope it all finds it's way back together someday!

Hint: During a massive dissassembly like this, put as many as possible, of the various bolts, screws, fasteners, clips, etc... back in their original holes so you don't have to remember where each of those various bolts, screws, fasteners, clips, etc... came from!

Happy Motoring, Mark

Ron, took a peek at your photo history...WHOA.

You definitely have become possessed

Keep going, guy, when you cruise in that ride it'll feel like you actually hand-built the whole thing! Guess your spousal unit never wanders into the garage and says "wutthe &^%$#* are you doin?"

BTW, is that a heated space for your project?

I'm blushing, such nice comments, I knew you guys cared.
I have been putting the bolts back in the holes in anticipation of them returning to thier original purpose. I also have been segregating varrious parts that are similar in boxes, like all dash, all lights ect.
In reality, I have found this to be a very easy car to work on once you know the secrets, which is where all of you come in.
The spousal unit rarely ventures into my "area" she does not understand my attraction to grease, and dirt. My youngest however seems very interested and may be a MB fanatic in the making.
I do love the seats in this ride, tons better than my W126 with leather!
Seem to feel better and fit me better as well.
Half my space is heated, so I will be able to do all the cleaning and small part assembly in comfort, where she is up on blocks is not however...
Dog, you mentioned "horse hair stuff" Is that what I am pulling (or falling) out of the dash guts as I am trying to trace vacuum/power lines?
It seems to be mixed with kleenex like substance, all in all pretty nasty.
Was it for soundproofing? Can/should it be replaced?
Will keep you all posted .

New Question to Ponder

Can you all fill me in on the likelyhood of valve seal failure VS bad rings and the obvious signs, and or differences.
I get smoke on start up, runs a bit rough, once warm, runs smooth, little if any smoke unless I really open up the throtle.

A few years back, I revived a neighbor's 72 220, that had sat in a shed for 18 years. Car now runs well, except for some blue smoke at startup. Suspect weak valve seals but advised him that, as his car isn't subject to emissions inspection, unless excessive oil consumption or plug fouling develops, he should leave it alone.

Happy Motoring, Mark

Smoke at initial startup is usually valve seals, especially if the car has been sitting for a long time the seals dry out. Very common on any engine.

Thanks
David

'Miss Daisy', my '60 220S Fintail, always smokes blue at startup, and has for years. I simply check or change the oil more frequently, drive and enjoy.

Certainly sounds like the seals. I did a little experiment yesterday. The reason I posted is that I had not started her in several days, and when I did I got the blue smoke screen start but then minimal if any while running. I then let her sit for about 6 hours and started it again and although I had a little blue smoke at start, it was much less and quickly went away. I guess it would corelate to seals as the longer it sits the more drain down??
Anyhow, I am not going to ponder this one any more, just wait till I get her on the road and start getting some miles on her. Thanks once agin, need to get my brake lines on this weekend so I can spin her around the block a few times.
More to follow...I am sure
