Factory paint chips
Howdy!
My "new" 1983 300D is an interesting color (greenish-gold with a dark green interior) and I was curious what that color might've originally been called when it left the factory. The paint code should be on the plate by the radiator, right? But where can I go to look up the code and see what the official MB name for it was? Thanks! Glenn

Wow, it's supposed to be way greener than it is.
The factory paint code appears to be 881, which is "Thistle Green Metallic Clearcoat." The original color coat is just so faded that it's more gold than green. That's, errr, about as womanly a color as you could get on a 1983 MB, too.

unsolicited endorsement
I've used paintscratch twice now for my '72 which has been resprayed at some point with the original color, Horizon Blue. The first bottle of touch-up was a stunningly close match, especially considering the paint on my car has gotta be pretty old.
Needed to reorder the same color cuz the first bottle dried up. When I got the second order, thought it looked a bit dark and confirmed it with a dab in an inconspicuous spot. Contacted paintscratch and they promptly and courteously fixed it. Highly recommend this group. |

Looks like you can buy in huge volume, too. ... How much paint do you need to color-coat the whole beastie?

The cost of the paint is a relatively insignificant part of the cost of a complete painting job. You may want to go with the Glasurit paint if your car was done in that originally.
