My 73 280SEL 4.5 (w108) runs out of puff at full steam

My 73 280SEL 4.5 that has had a number of running issues is running reasonably well but not at 100%. It feels like its still missing a tiny bit (im assuming that this v8 is silky smooth when good). It also appears to run out of steam at full throttle. When 3/4 down, it would accellerate pretty well , but when pinning the gas pedal, the tone of the engine changes and it seems to lose power.

I also still smell gas during running so I suspect it may still be running rich.

If any members know what this symptom is , I would be grateful if you would let me know.

This is the site I turn to for info on the Djet system. It was created for Porsche 914s but just about everything also applies to Mercedes.

Check out the troubleshooting section here:

This is the home page:

Lots of good info on the theory of operation in the Djet sections.

Fuel Flow

Can you smell gas when the system is pressurised but the engine not running ? Is the gas smell coming from the tailpipe or do you have a leak which is reducing the fuel pressure and reducing the top end performance.
Also, when did you change the fuel filter last ?
The only other suggestion, is the throttle switch badly adjusted or failed so your not getting full throttle enrichment.

Normally the smell comes when the car is running and appears to be coming from the tail pipe. I think the fuel filter was changed. I will have Chris check the full throttle adjustment

It sounds like you're running WAY too rich. When you floor it, the 10% enrichment literally chokes the engine.

Find vac leaks. I bet you have a ton of them. It'll make your engine run way too rich. Manifold gaskets, door locks, brake booster, tranny modulator, and most importantly, the MAP sensor hose. Make sure none of them have any vac leaks.
