Start with one entitled 'The Gold-Plated Porsche'. Not so much a restoration guide as an entertaining read.

Here's an Amazon link which might not work...

Gotta have an original parts catalogue with schematic drawings for the entire car, probably the most important book you can get your hands on. Parts catalogues have never been reprinted or reissued. Sometimes they appear on ebay for about 20-$30 and deffinitely worth the money.

Get the service CD. That or the equivalent 5 paper manuals from ebay.

- Chassis manual for 108/109/111/113 cars
- 3.5/4.5 engine manual (if your car has a v8)
- Kulmeister A/C manual
- Owner's manual
- 1972-1980 maintenance manual

If you are just looking for a generalist book, you can get this:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0760305927/qid=1131885569/sr=8-7/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i7_xgl14/102-9142741-2034567?v=glance&s=books&n=507846
(go for that used 7.50$ copy).

An interesting way to spend an hour or two is to search amazon for "mercedes benz", which generates some 8,871 hits. -CTH
