108 cowl removal - wiper arms

I suspect that my blower fan is chock full o' leaves and debris, and, as someone else suggested, I want to hose it down with WD-40 to clear up some electrical noise. I'm having some trouble getting into the cowl, though.

I can't seem to get the wiper arms off. On the driver's side, when I pull up the cap, I see threads, but no nut, and it doesn't pull up very far. Wiggling and prying on the arm doesn't seem to do anything.

On the passenger's side, when I pull up the cap, it exposes just a little sliver of the nut, certainly not enough to get a grip on with any tool that I have. I suppose I could use a very thin flare wrench on it, but I don't know the size.

Any suggestions on how to get in to this stuff? The caps just don't have hardly any room to move.

deafen, as I recall, my '72 108 has a nut under each cover that you pop up. I have not had any difficulty getting a wrench on the nuts and then angle the wiper arms up off the glass in a locked position. This seems to release tension which holds the arms on the shafts while the arms are down (agaijst the glass). The ahole arm assembly is a really snug fit over the splined shafts but some juiggling and pulling upwards always springs mine free. Hope this helps a bit.
