One other thing, I just noticed The W114 250C clock I repaired is marked 'Keinzle', not VDO. If any VDO clocks were fitted to early W114-115, those may have the detacheable white plastic back cover but I dont have another sample to check. In any case, most of these early self-winding electric clocks suffer from a blown internal fuse.

Happy Motoring, Mark

I have one of each. The one I repaired is on the 71, plastic back, 3 screws. Resoldered the fusable link and it works great. I did have to draw the little copper movable flange in front of the other arm in order for it to work. Don't really know why but soldering it behind did not work.
I also have a metal case one like you describe MarK, until your post I could not figure out how to get it apart, I may try it just to see if I can

It's been my experience that the white plastic back clocks are the mechanical movement types with the fuse link and the fixed case units are quartz clocks. The hands have fallen off of my quartz spare but I’ve been able to fix three or four of the mechanical type.

Don’tcha just love that bit of a click coming from the dash every few minutes?

Yup, that is a neat sound. Quite interesting to look at on the bench. makes you wonder why they did it that way

My 1970 metal-case 250C Keinzle clock is definitely an electric self-winder. I think the quartz clocks came in around 1975. I was able to spread the back of the chrome bezel with a sharp tool, like a knife blade, enoughto release it's grip on the can. Then I had to work the bezel back over the rim and bend it back to shape with some blunt round tool like a screwdriver handle. There are some tiny nicks and ripples to the back of the bezel but those wouldn't be visible if the clock was back in the instrument cluster. However, if I needed to open it up again I don't know if the bezel would survive a second operation.
I'm sure if these Keinzle clocks were ever factory repaired, they would simply install a new bezel and use a proper crimping tool for a factory-assembled appearance.
The VDO clocks are definitely much easier to open up.

Happy Motoring, Mark

I would agree Mark, this one is stamped 1971, so I assume it is mechanical as well, when I am out of things "to do" I will operate on it. Kinda for fun....
