OK, it's been about 150 miles since I switched to NGK BP6ES plugs on my 190sl. I gapped them to about.27". I pulled the plugs last night, and they looked "better" than before, but still some carbon around the rim. The tip and the center look good - light brown/grey deposits. But I still think I'm getting more carbon than I should. Should/could I:

1) drop the gap even more to .24"
2) try a "hotter" plug: BP5ES?

Thanks,

Bill ... I pulled one of my plugs. It is a Basch Super copper W7DC gapped at .032. I must have replaced my plugs last yearwhen I got new plugs for the 230SL. It was brownish, grayish white near the tip and oilly around the base.

As for yours, they sound fine. If the tips are clean and grayish, the temperature range is about right. If you are getting carbon buildup around the base, then you are probably running a little rich. Better too rich than too lean.

190SL Plug Deposits.

Jim, thanks for your response. I switched to NKGs at Robby's suggestion. Today when I drove to my daughter's soccer game, I thought "this car has gremlins - it's running like crap today" after a flawless week of driving. After leaving the game, I drove down a winding, hilly country road and gave it the old "Italian Tune Up", and sure enough, the missing went away. Could I be getting deposits on the plugs causing the electrodes to short out? I'm going to pull a plug or two tonight (hopefully...) when I go out to put some more sunroof lube together for shipping to Mercedesshop members! I'm just wondering if I should try a hotter plug? Or, the other problem I have it that it's about 1-1/2 miles out of our neighborhood before I can really run the car. So, it spends a LOT of time at idle and/or slow speed. I'm rambling...

A hotter plug maybe your answer. If you think about the downside of a hotter plug, it is pre-ignition and a burned center electrode. You are not pushing it hard enough for either to occur. Robby drives his car hard and fast so a cooler plug probably suits his driving style. By the way, Robby, if you read this, post how Pea Soup is running.

Spark Plug, 190SL

OK, I just ordered some hotter plugs from Fast Lane (NGK BP5ES). I'll let everyone know if they run better/longer. This car runs GREAT when the plugs are clean...

I don't know how for into this problem you've looked but I'll share my experience if the hotter plugs don't work. I drive a vintage ducati motercycle which has carbs that really dump gas in the cylynders. after tuning it to factory specs and still finding no reason why my plugs kept fouling so soon ie. mixture, jet size, plug heat, ingition power, accelerator pump adj. etc.. I just wrote it off as it's a race bred bike that just needs to be driven hard. when I moved to albuquerque from sea level the problem stopped. the problem was my float level was a little off so it always ran too rich and my plugs would do what yours are doing. with the altitude increase it changed ever so slightly yet perfectly. I just thought if you still have trouble down the road and i don't get to share that later it may help you out. take care, darren
