108 steering wheel 2 versions interchangble?

i have a 68 108 which came with a black steering wheel, the later version i think, the one with no chrome surround for the center pad.

someone is offering me a white steering, the older version with the chrome surrounding the center pad. Are they interchangable?

coz i went there and realized that mine, the black one, had this large spacer attached between the wheel and the steering column, i only had to remove the 5 nuts to remove the wheel, while the WHITE one didn't have this big spacer and was held by just one nut/bolt. I'm guessing they have different columns? is it possible to rerofit the OLDER version with the NEWER coulumn?
HELP! i want that white steering wheel!

Dang, that's what i feared. hmmm, he did give me the center piece with the chrome ring though... might just end up painting the wheel. haha just a thought. thanks for confirming!

i don't want to have to fabricate an extension or something... steering wheel failure is not a risk i'm willing to take.

thanks again

Steering wheel interchangeability

The two types can be installed. The only difference is the length of the white steering wheel column is longer than the black and hence no spacer required. The overall lengths are virtually the same. The other difference is that the automatic gear change lever and indicator stalk look different and the wiring loom connector is not compatible. If you are competent with auto electrics, you could easily wire up this loom.

i wouldn't have problems with the automatic stalk since my car has a floor shift manual. i would still have to fabricate a spacer, coz the old style wheel has a single bolt holding it down, while the newer one, mine, is held down by 5 nuts to the said spacer. The spacer is at least 5 inches thick, its a hollow deal, i think its for crash protection or something
