Christy,
I forgot to mention, on my 1972 250 4door the door switch for the rear interior light is on the center pillar 2 inches above the door-check strap for the rear door. Good Luck, Mark DiSilvestro

Christy,
Have you had a chance to match up the wiring diagrams in the service manual to the car? I'm sorry to say that I haven't given this thread too much attention. Somebody keeps asking me questions about carbs. The wiring overhead SHOULD (it's been a while) start under the dash and climb up the A-pillar and then go back, towards the rear. Perhaps as the wiring passes the B pillar, it drops DOWN to go to the light switch. Do you have electric windows? The alternative wiring scheme would be for the light switch wiring to follow the window wiring from under the driver's seat. I doubt it does, but again, it's been a while. Perhaps now is the time to plan a field trip. Are there any pick-a-part junk yards in your area? Visit a dead car and check it out. -CTH |

Now Mark...what's the door check strap?? Y'know I'm just getting ONto all this lingo!!
And Cth...My car has non-electric windows. So....is it possible that these wires belong inside the headliner??? REALLY guys....I'm TRYING to understand this!!! ~Christy |

Christy,
There should be a metal strap attached between the pillar and the door about halfway betreen the 2 door hinges. Its purpose is to hold the door open in 1 or 2 positions. Each door should have a check strap and a switch plunger should be sticking out about 2 inches above each strap. Good Luck, Mark DiSilvestro

happy plunger..
OK..the plunger appears to be in good working order.
I took out the unit to further inspect IT and the bulb is A-ok in it. It had a thick black cord attaching to the side of it, similar to the one that's chopped off and wrapped around that OH-***** bar in the back. I couldn't SEE what kind of wires make up this cord that plugs directly into the unit, but they appear to be the same size (it's hard to tell). So..where do you think the wire that goes directly to the rear dome light unit, goes after it travels AWAY from the unit?? It seems to be under the headliner... but it probably is more organized than that, huh? Hmmmmm... Just so you KNOW..I am only SPECULATING actually DOING this job..so that's why I still haven't found anything out!! heeheee!! ~Christy |

Christy,
One pair of wires (probably light brown) should go from the rear interior light to each door switch. a third wire probably goes from the door switch to the rocker switch on the left side of the dash. these 3 wires should be ground wires, There should be a fourth wire from the interior light fuse to the rear interior light. This wire should be 'hot' that means carrying 12 volts. I'm saying "should" and "probably" because neither my Haynes Manual nor my Mercedes Chassis and Body manual is showing the wiring diagram for the rear door switches. I've never had the headliner out so I can't help you there. Good Luck, Mark DiSilvestro
