I am planning to drive my 190SL to the 190SL Group Convention in Leadville CO this summer. It is over 10,000 feet and there are higher passes in all directions. My SL has Weber Carburetors so I can easily swap my main jets. Does anyone have nay idea about: should I adjust for the elevation? I assume I select a leaner jet; any ideas on how much adjustment might be needed to get the most out of my little engine.

At 10,000 ft we'll have a 30% loss in power. Install a turbocharger. Let me tell you, some of those mountains I drove through in Alaska, I thought my car was about to die. We'll be down to about 70 HP net, going uphill, and with our wives onboard. our cars will not be very spritely!

Altitude Driving

OOPS! Hit the wrong button:

How about a nitrous tank... Robby, if you are running rich now, won't you run REAL rich at altitude? Jim, I'd GUESS that you could take a few jets with you and try changing them as you get higher in altitude. Denver's at a higher altitude, do you know anyone there with a 190SL and Webers that can check and see how they have theirs set up?

Finally some facts. Robby gave me a change page to the 220SE shop manual dated 1961 that has a table for selection the correct jet for a given altitude. Of course the table applies to a 220 with jet measurements in "Gg" and altitude in "m". Starting with this as a guide and not knowing what altitude our Weber jets were "calibrated" for, I used the following numbers. At 500m, the recommended 220 jet is a 0147; at 2500m the recommended jet is 0137. This represents a 7% jet size reduction. Our jets are "115" so a switch to 110 or 105 would be reasonable. (I could have guessed that without any documentation or calculation). I plan to order a set of 105 jets and to swap them out in Pueblo CO. Hope to see you all in Leadville.
