I was reading about the Datsun 5-spd in a 220d post and it got me to thinking. Can one change the drive ratio to get a lower RPM at highway speeds? I cruised to Atlanta the other day for the first time and could not help but notice the 3700 revolutions at 80-85 mph. What a ruckus! I may be asking a dumb question but would still like to know if it could be done and would it be hard? Thanks!

Food for thought. You might be able to lower rpm at 80-85 by changing gear ratios, but would your engine make enough torque at the new rpm to keep the speed up? Say you lowered it from 3,700 to 3,000, would you still be able to do 80? My bet is not, or we could get all of our cars to go 200+ mph!
