can anyone recomend a good site for details on the solex 4A1 carb????

Just use the advanced search engine specific to this forum for "Solex"......
For example from the archives in April '05 thread entitled "W114 280 recent purchase - your opinion" -> [ If you are not a stickler for *technical correctness* and a cheapskate like me, I would suggest that you wire the secondaries shut on the infamous Solex 4A1 carb, that will give you about 90mph flat out and at least 80mph up hills and save a load of gasoline...... ] |

The M110 engine manual has pages and pages on the 4A1. Also the Haynes book on the 123/280.

There are rebuild kits available for the 4A1. Should you go that route, be gentle, and don't break any little but very important plastic pieces.
