Greetings all,
I just purchased my first MB (a 1970 220) and am slowly trying to fix things up. First off, the speedometer wasn't working so I unhooked the cable from the spedo and pulled out the internal cable. Well, half of it anyway, it broke in the middle. I looked under the car for the other end but couldn't find it. Does anyone know where it's connected so I can get the other half of the cable out? Also, before I do any serious work on the car, I'd like to get a manual. I've been reading the forums and I'm pretty impressed with the amount of work people have devoted to their cars. I used to work on my cars before but gave up because I wasn't very good. This MB is such a beautiful car, I'd like to get back into it, or at least be a bit more informed. So my second question is, does anyone have a suggestion for a good repair manual or does everyone here just _know_ how to do everything they need? Thanks. Skrunch. |

The tranny end of the cable should be mounted to the left side of the tranny, probably situated directly above the crossmember. Don't bother trying to replace just the inner cable, replace the whole cable. Check the PartsShop and FastLane, either should have the proper cable for your car.
The cable should be held to the speedo drive gear by a small bolt (10mm head) and the drive gear should be attached to the tranny housing by a similarly sized bolt. You may find it easier to remove the drive gear from the tranny before trying to remove the cable. If anything like mine, the rubber crush seal may be stuck to the drive gear and a real PITA to get out. Once removed it is a simple matter of routing the new cable through the firewall and to the tranny.

Thanks, that was very helpful. I've heard people talk about the MB service CD's. Are they a good, complete reference?

Well Skrunch,
I can't comment on the CD's, since MB did not put out the CD's for the W108's. What I have read, is that the CD sets are basically the three manuals on disk, and should cover just about everything. According to users, the navigation of the CD's can be a little tough as they don't follow what YOU may think is a logical pattern. Check to se if the PartsShop has the CD's for your chasis. If not, then chances are good that model was not converted and you will have to find the manuals. I was able to get the Service Manual for the 108 through Mercedes by calling 1-800-FOR-MERC.
