1972 250c diesel
Does anyone know anything about a 250c 114 diesel? I have found one for sale that has a 4 cylinder with a 4 speed manuel transmission. The car was imported in 1972. Would parts be available for the engine? How good were the diesels back in the early 70's? Richard

was originally gas. not a problem, the diesel is slow but reliable and 'bout bulletproof. parts readily available, etc.

A lot of people in the Vintage forum AND the Diesel forum would be interested in seeing pics of this conversion. Do take some and post them!

I drive a 74' 240D every day...well almost every day. It's like a blender on frappe on the freeway, drinks oil, and smokes a little but it's fun to drive. I have taken it on 300 mile round trips without hesitation. A coupe might be a little more spirited in diesel form with a few hundred less pounds.

It appears that the car is a conversion. The car is on craigslist in Sacramento. The owner forwarded photos of the number plates which establish it as a gas car originally. The current owner bought it as a diesel but doesn't know to much about it. He says it runs great but has trouble with the rear calipers. Anyone interested please have at it. I am looking for a stock manual gas model. Richard

250CE 2.2 or 2.4 (!)
Seller sez it came from S. America, and it's wearing Latvian and RAA (UK?) badges, so this must truly be nearly a record Flying Dutchman. Can see clutch pedal in one pic, but seller neglected to show either a front view to see if has Euro lights or the pax door which took the hit; also no pics to date of engine.
Close-ups show surface corrosion here and there. VIN is 114.022 12 019980, so it was built as a 250CE/automatic - no word on where or when the conversion was done. Actually, for parts support, I guess a diesel four-banger would be preferable to an EFI/ECU M130, as long as you aren't looking for a rocket. And, with stiffening, etc - I believe the 114 coupes are very close to being as heavy as the sedans... Seller thinks it's "rare" (which is sorta true, for a diesel converted coupe, eh?), and firm on $2500, so far, but he's gonna consult with a "collector", hoping to raise the price. Considering that a nearby rebuilt-M110 cherry 280C just went for about that much last week... |
