Non MB, Bought another car or three

Well, these are not MB's but in the UK they competed against them for the executive express market back in the late 60's and early 70's.

I was cruising the Craigslist pages when and ad hit me like a thunderbolt.

Rovers: 3500s, TC2000, SC2000 - $500

Three very rare English sedans. Included are many parts. Too many other projects going on and we need to clear these cars. The 3500s is the best candidate for fixing up and driving and it is amazingly in tact including the interior and original V-8 engine. Please don't let these go to the crusher! I'm giving this one last chance and unfortunately, they will be recycled and then they will be gone forever. If you are interested, reply as soon as possible! This is an "all or nothing" proposition. Bring your trailors and trucks and give them a good home!

Even though I had an idea that probably no one in the city would know what the hell these cars are, I shot the guy an Email to comfirm that they are P6 Rovers and left my number.

A gentleman called and informed me that the cars belong to his father. He has owned them for 15-20 years and stopped driving them about 10 years ago. The 2000SC was restored twice by his son and then wrecked when he fell asleep at the wheel. The 3500S was just parked and left there 10 years ago and the 2000TC needs restoration but still savable.

I went to see the cars today as they are about 50 miles away from me. The owner lives on about 30 acres by Peachtree City on a beautiful lot of land. The cars were parked by his lake and hence were covered in moss. He also had about 2 truck loads of parts that are going with the car. I paid his asking price ($500 for everything) and agreed that I will pick up the cars sometime in the next two months as I need to find a place to store them.

I deal mainly with the father as the son was out of town. The father was a seriously cool character and a big BMW and British car enthusiast. He has his own 93 750I (which is the Beemer M-100) His son who runs a business out of a barn on the land had a 635csi that he drives daily and a Euro 633csi that he is restoring that his father imported from Germany back in the day.

He also has a 67 E-type, 3 TR-6's a 1940 Ford and a 1960's Galaxy 500. He plans on restoring the E-Type and the TR-6 but will probably get rid of the rest.

I plan to make one car out of the three (the 3500S). This is possibly going to be the toughest one yet.

Here are some pictures:

Over the edge

Well boys, I am afraid Alabbasi has finally snapped. He's sold his soul to the British devils. We need to get a caravan together, drive to his place and give him a gauntlet slapping. Perhaps we can steer him back towards the light. Next, he'll make casual mention of such terms as, "tyres", "wings" and "bonnets". It's sad but I have seen it before. It occurs mostly with old Triumph motorcycles, Lotus cars and MGB's. It's an ugly thing but , pip, pip, keep a stiff upper lip and we'll help you through this, eh wot?

i have never driven a rover, but they had a good rep for handling and safety. i think you may be able to have some good fun there.

that drivers seat looked pretty comfy.

Now he is gonna need to get ahold of two UK car magazines.
Practical Classics and Classic and Sports Car.
Lots of good info, some very funny articles (race prepping a 2CV???) and lots of spares listings.

Even stories about Mercedes-Benz from time to time.

I'm surprised that's LHD. Otherwise, it looks like you got a good deal for $500 if you can get just ONE of them to run. I'd imagine these are quite rare indeed. Those hood vents make it look like it's trying to be a Firebird or something

The best car-porn we've seen on this forum in awhile. Do you have any engine bay and interior dashboard pics? Havent seen a Rover sedan in more than 30 years. Worked as kid in Fiat dealership that also carried Rovers in NYC suburb circa 1970.

The Rover 3500S was powered by the mid 1960's Buick small block V-8 that Brits bought blueprints of and put into production to their own specs. Same small block engine went into the Triumph Stag after car companies merged and formed British Leyland Motors. Caution is cork gaskets especially if it's an earlier model. No doubt was top of the line performance luxury car in its day, competitor to the MB 108.

Looks like a fine mess you've gotten yourself into. Refurbing the 3500S and/or even the TC2000 calls for eccentric craziness of the highest order.

Alabbasi,

I have four words to describe my feelings about your recent purchase:

You are my hero.

Actually that's how I normally talk (not the stiff upper lip part, I would have gotten beaten up at school if I talked like that) I was raised in West London and moved here to the US when I was 26 (2000).

I am going to see if I can get the parts here first and catalogue them as I can store parts. Then I think the next step is to take the parts car and part it out. I should then be able ot manage a couple of cars. I should have pictures by then.

This time next year, I should have enough restored cars to create my own Guy Ritchie movie.

Already subscribe to them

I have been reading practical classics since I was a kid and still have issues in the UK from way back in 1990. I still have a subscription coming to me here in the US through EWA.

I think that was one of the motivator for restoring the 6.9. My thinking was that if someone can take a $50 Morris Marina and drop $10k on it to turn it into a $500 Morris Marina, I can do bring back a 6.9!

I spent many happy hours scavenging two really comprehensive junkyards in my hometown as a teen (in mid-Ohio.) I remember studying the chrome box thing on the front of a Rover with driving lights. (I got the lights which, horrendously, I put on a '65 Ranchero ) but do not recall a connection to the mystery box. Now I see it on one of your cars Al. Is it a sensor? Auto-dimmer? English tea biscuit holder? WHUT IS IT????

My first car was a 1969 Rover 2000tc (twin carb). I put over 300,000 on that car. They were considered the most unreliable car by road and track with the Lotus elan in second place. They could thank Lucas for that. I had great luck with both cars but spent many enjoyable weekends either rebuilding the starter or replacing the points.I finally sold my Elan about 5 years ago. The strange rectangular unit on the front of the car is actually an ice detector. When the temp drops below a certain level a light goes on that tells you to be ware. With connally leather seats, wilton wool carpets, aluminum hood and boot lid, it was considered by many to be a mini Rolls Royce. Good luck with your find. I will look to see if I have any bits or books left, If I do I will be happy to forward. Let me know if you get one running. Richard

I always thought hood scoops were an American thing... that one with the V8 has three! Looks like a cool car.
