"Excellent condition" 4.5 on eBay.

This "Excellent condition" car on eBay is worth looking at for a good laugh:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mercedes-Benz-200-Series-280SE-4-5-1973-Mercedes-Benz-280SE-4-5-OUTSTANDING-CLASSIC_W0QQitemZ4630075030QQcategoryZ6329QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I never knew they came from the factory with dents on the left front, rocker rust and a horrible, obvious rocker rust repair job! Add in a tear in the driver's seat and a pic showing a pretty hot running engine, and well... it really makes you think about how insane some eBay sellers are, eh?

Well, I think I got the sign I should part it out... The gas pedal has actually rusted off the floorboard. There are no holes in the floorboard up front, but it still managed to rust off! Maybe I can sell it on eBay as "Near mint" for 10k?

I checked the compression on cyl #7 just to see what kind of boost the 3.5 heads gave it in compression. I got 142 PSI cold (as in "The first time the engine was turned over in over 2 weeks" cold). I wonder if that's good? I'll post a warm measurement in a bit. Also, I think my #3 injector is dead, it's getting spark and I tried the plug from injector #4 on it, the idle didnt speed up. Could be a fouled plug, my #7 cyl wasn't firing (Why I did the compression check today) but now it seems to be fine. It still wants to run though!

hey tom , you are so right on that ebay job. I think my daily driver is now at least a $20,000 ride by comparison!! Did you notice it has listed two different kinds of "brand new" tires? Oh, and why can't I see a resonator at all!! Is it missing or just in the shadows in each and every shot? That really shiny dash wood looks like somebody just sprayed polyurethane over everything. And, how does one so simply repair a tear or two in the MB tex? (Probably the same way you repair that big honkin' hole in the driver's side door plastic, on the top by the window...)

The same way you fix the HUGE CRACK(s) in the dash - REPLACE THEM. $$$. I could restore every last aspect on my 4.5 for half of what he wants for that thing.

I will only buy cheap, obviously cosmetically-deficient cars on ebay...If I can't see the car in person I'm not spending big bucks on it. There's nothing worse than a tired car that has been fluffed and buffed by a dealer...I'd rather have an honestly tired car...I'll fluff it myself after I get it home.

Heh,

I thought the v8's had a four speed like the sixes. Guess I'm the dummy in this scenario. Why would they put fewer gears in the bigger car? I guess due to strength or they felt it didn't need the extra speed due to hp & torque?

take care,

Jester

They had the 4 speeds in the 6.3 but not in the 4.5 (although I hear that some South African market V8 cars did).
The later W116 V8's were all 3 speed including the 6.9. You really could do wih the extra gear.

Indeed. When I fix up my 108 - or put it into a much less rusty chassis - I will probably put in a 4-speed from a 3.5.

4 speed auto or manual?

I would love to put a manual tranny into mine.
