Clean car

Thats a very clean car but holy cow that's a lot of wonga for a W114 coupe.

To quantify this, I found a 280CE in the autotrader UK, it's not the cleanest car but you really can get new front wings at 45GBP because thats what I paid for mine when i bought them. If it has long MOT then it should be solid underneath and i'm pretty certain you can negotiate him down to half that.

"1972 MERCEDES-BENZ 280 CE Pillarless,
Coupe, 125k, T&T(exempt), Tombstone lights, very orignal, very cool, very reliable, FSH, W110 2.8i 6 cylinder engine as standard, power steering, electric sunroof, original Blaupoint stereo, excellent starter/runner, starts first time whatever the weather, cruises all day long around town or on the motorway, good oil pressure, never overheats, no leaks, 70's style interior (mex tex)with no headrests, walnut dash with thin steering wheel, wings tatty, front ones could do with being replaced but are still available @ £45 each! Just been driving around all day with the windows down and the car attracts a lot of attention, I know people always say that but this is different. people look as it effortlessly glides past them in their 'normal' cars. This car does get noticed, a real cruiser. A true usuable classic built to a super high German standard when Mercedes cars were built to last. I could go on all day. lovely car. £1,800Telephone: 07830 244109
Distance: 95 miles
Price: £1,800"

English coupe

Yea Al, its pricey for the French coupe in comparison to the UK one,
but such are the vagaries of living in Rip-Off Ireland
Ok his price includes all delivery, plates, registration, but i know what your saying- its still a fair lump of moolah. My saloon wasnt that much cheaper, so i reckon there wont be too much of cash trading hands if i do go for the coupe. What i can say is that the website cars do have v good bodies, the UK one might just have a bit more rot than on the doors/wings. £45 a wing is pretty good though.. Damn i'll have to think this one over...
Time for a Guinness me reckons

Rot on W114

I agree with you on the potential rot of a W114. I found Spark plug packets lining the bottom of the rear wing over the sills and news paper from 1980 as the rear wing itself. The floor looked like a tea bag and the right front wing was screwed to 1/2 plastic bucket (the type used to change oil) and then covered in filler.

Fortunately with the exception of the floor pan, i was able to get most repair sections aftermarket.

I now know of a place where I can get floor pans)(here) for this car.

I plan to bring mine to the US someday. It will definitely be odd driving a RHD car in the US.

interesting selection of fillers there Al
is it unusual to see a RHD car in the States?
i lived/worked in Germany for a couple of years so i was used to LHDs, but driving the 230 was my first experience of driving on the 'other' side. It didnt take long to get used to, just turning and parking needed a little bit more care. One thing though, it does make checking your blind spot before changing lanes a lot easier. I havent heard back from the dealer yet, i got an email from him a few days ago saying he would have his partner here to give the car a once over. We'll see how it goes.

Cheers,

Tony
