Injector Pumps interchange? 190d to 200d?

I bought a 1962 190d yesterday that has not run in years. The guy's mechanic had decided, with no good reason i could ascertain, that the car needed an injection pump, and the guy gave me a lead on where to get one. Today I was working on the car, putting the fuel lines all back in place and charging the battery and realized from looking at the tag on the engine that the engine is a 200D engine. Now I am wondering if the '62 190d pump that I found will work with this 200 D engine. any advice? It looks like the pump that is on there was factory rebuilt at some point in the past by the tags on the fuel lines, so I'm thinking the pump may be OK.

By the way, the mechanic seemed unfamiliar with diesel engines and I'm now thinking that it is glow plug issues that keep it from starting. I couldn't raise the slightest glow or warmth from the glow plug indicator in almost a minute of holding the switch out.

Also, the guy had the lines off of two injectors, and when looking into the little hole in the tops of the injectors, one of them is just a hole, the other one seems to have some kind of tiny triangluar plate of some kind just inside the top of the injector. What's up with that?

Thanks!

Mark

I would try to get the glow plugs working. The early and most later models just wont start at starter cranking speed unless the glows are working. The little triangle belongs in the injector. I would ehxaust all other ideas before changing the inj pump. I think that your model needs to have oil added to the inj pump. Is your car a stick or auto? If it is a stick and systems ck out as well as you can do without it running, try to tow start it. That will generally get them running even if the glows don't work. Just be careful to pick the right gear and speed. Generally third gear and about 20 to 25 mph.

Thanks for the reply.

That is my instinct as well, work on the glow plugs. I will probably pass on the pump for now and maybe order the updated glow plug kit from **************.com. Besides, I may be picking up a 200d parts car tomorrow that may have an injector pump in the trunk.

The liitle triangle is just a fuel deflecter. Some of the injectors will have it and some won't. It makes no difference in performance or fuel rate. Mercedes (and all diesel manufacturers) experimented with many different types of injectors to reduce the "knock".

Somewhere down the road someone replaced some of the injectors. I've even seen the deflecter in 2 out of the 4 fittings on the pump itself. This was for calibration purposes and had no effect on operation.

The injection pumps will interchange. But those pumps are usually pretty hardy and don't give much trouble. I'd almost bet it is your glow plugs, as there should be a glow in 5 or 10 seconds. They are hooked in series, so if one burns out, none will work. These engines are pretty cold-blooded, and need a lot of glow plugging to get them started. Also check for air in the fuel system. Bleed the fuel filter using the bleed screw on top and pumping the hand pump till no air comes out. Then tighten the bleed screw and crack open the fuel lines at the injector. Crank the engine till fuel comes out of all the injection lines.

Motorhead is right about the injection pump needing oil. It has it's own oil reservoir, with a check plug on the side and oil cap on top. Fill the pump with engine oil till it runs out of the check plug. Don't worry if diesel runs out of the pump first. Diesel will seep by the plunger and needs to be purged from the oil reservior.

P.S. Don't use starting fluid with the glow plugs hooked up, as this can cause engine damage.
