I drove mine as a daily driver 9 out of the 12 years i owned it...
...almost every time i filled up someone would want to come over and look at. of course premium was maybe a 1.20 then...... and i never really got more than 13 mpg.... still the most inexpensive car i have ever driven.....it depreciated 700 dollars in the 12 years i owned it....and i put about 1,000 dollars a year into it.... you shouldn't have to pay more than 5k for one in pretty decent shape..... one in great shape would be another 1-2k....

I don't think I've put more than $2k into my 4.5 in the last 4 years. Of course, I did all the work myself and got over 95% of her parts used in the junkyard or on eBay. That also includes the $200+ I spent on the 3.5 heads and cams. Honestly, I would have no problems with a 4.5 as a daily driver if I had the money for gas. You CAN get 16MPG if you drive with a VERY, VERY light foot and run it as lean as allowable. But I prefer running this engine the way it was designed, and that yields 13MPG on all highway trips that average 90MPH >_> (Mile markers / time)
The door and window seals will probably all be shot, unless you know they were replaced recently. They aren't TOO important if you dont drive it in the rain. Put on 4 new brake hoses, new rad hoses, and belts. Change the oil, tranny fluid, and differential fluid. She'll be more reliable than any 90's-era domestic car!

my 108 4.5 is a daily driver 3/4 of the year here in salty ohio. of course, many of my "daily drives" are running 2 miles into town for the post or a few odd groceries. about 1/3 of my days i do not even start a vehicle. my commute to my office only occurs about 2x week and is a 30 mile run early in the AM. this is when i blow the crud out from putzing around slowly the rest of the time i drive the 108.
mileage is poor, rubber must be all new, panache is irrepressable!! i have had a number of odd/nice/old cars (lancia beta, volvo P122S, BMW 1600-2, audi 100LS, Renault R-10, VW Type III, plus many old american cars -- '65 mustang, '61-'64 falcons/comets (x5), '65 ranchero, '58 buick, '61 biscayne, '69 impala, etc) and none have had the lure for spectators that the 108 has. the price to me seems quite high. i just toyed with buying a local 108 here with the 6 cyl and it was really clean with very little undercarriage rust and no apparent body rust or repair. asking price was $2500. odo read "14,xxx" so I assume it had rolled over at least once. still kicking myself for not getting it -- BUT, next ride is going to go to my 18yr old and I knew in my heart keeping up with 2 108 daily drivers (along with 3 other vehicles) could tax my time. Thus, bottom line from this perspective, if you do not mind spending an hour or two per week, at least for a while, getting the 108 mechanically up to speed, do not buy it. this is time invested beyond regular maintenance, cleaning, etc. sorry so wordy |
